The New York Yankees continue leading the AL East, but closer Luke Weaver’s hamstring injury has created uncertainty in the bullpen and questions about his immediate future.

Weaver suffered the injury during warmup stretches in Sunday’s victory over the Dodgers. He described feeling a sudden “jump” and “grab” in his hamstring. The Yankees placed him on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a left hamstring strain, though manager Aaron Boone indicated the absence will extend beyond the minimum timeframe.

“He just told me, ‘I saw 15 days on that IL.’ So we’ll see,” Boone explained, suggesting a longer recovery period. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the expected absence could last 4–6 weeks, though the Yankees haven’t officially confirmed that timeline.

Unexpected injury ‘blindsided’ Weaver

The hamstring problem appeared suddenly and caught Weaver completely off guard. After completing his warmup routine late in Sunday’s contest, he experienced an unusual sensation in his leg that immediately raised concerns.

“I’m very blindsided by the fact that this [injury] happened,” Weaver explained to reporters. “I take a lot of internal impact, just when it comes to figuring out why… but it is what it is.”

The timing proves particularly frustrating given Weaver’s exceptional recent performance. He has established himself as one of baseball’s premier relievers since late last season. From August 16, 2024, forward, no MLB pitcher has held opponents to a lower batting average (.135). He ranked second in WHIP (0.77), second in ERA (0.99), and third in slugging percentage against (.214) among 146 qualified relievers with at least 30 innings.

His 2025 campaign continued that dominance with a 1.05 ERA and eight saves across 24 appearances after taking over closing duties when Devin Williams struggled early this season.

Recovery timeline remains uncertain

Weaver rejected suggestions that workload contributed to his injury despite pitching eight times between May 13-26, including three consecutive games from May 20-22.

“There’s a lot of variables,” he explained. “Our job is to go out there and to be dependable… It’s hard to pinpoint one thing.”

Despite the uncertainty, Weaver maintains a positive outlook. “I feel very optimistic. I feel good right now,” he stated. This marks his first hamstring injury, making recovery predictions more challenging. He stressed the importance of being “strong from these types of stints and reset more than anything.”

The Yankees are proceeding cautiously with his rehabilitation. Boone expects Weaver to resume throwing and running activities soon but emphasized they’ll handle his return “the right way.”

Contract implications and team impact

Weaver’s transformation from struggling starter to dominant closer represents one of the Yankees’ most successful reclamation projects recently. After disappointing results with Cincinnati in 2023, his bullpen conversion in New York has been remarkable. This success story exemplifies why the Yankees have reduced spending on expensive relief pitchers in favor of internal development.

His injury creates interesting contract dynamics. Weaver is earning $2.5 million in 2025 before hitting free agency this winter. His market value is expected to increase substantially, potentially making him too expensive for the Yankees’ future plans unless they negotiate an extension quickly.

Internal discussions had identified Weaver as the fourth most valuable player on the 2025 roster alongside Aaron Judge, Carlos Rodón, and Max Fried. His temporary absence increases pressure on remaining bullpen arms and may force trade deadline acquisitions before July 31.

Yankees reorganize late-inning strategy

Aaron Boone and J.C. Escarra congratulates Devin Williams after his save earns the Yankees 3-2 win over the Guardians on June 3, 2025.

Weaver’s absence has forced immediate bullpen adjustments. Williams will return to ninth-inning responsibilities after improving dramatically with a 1.80 ERA over his previous 11 outings. Boone endorsed the move based on Williams’ restored confidence and command.

“He’s at full force right now,” Weaver said about Williams. “I know we got a stud pitcher. When he is at his peak, there’s not much that could be done on the hitter’s side.”

Additional relief options remain available for Boone. Fernando Cruz was activated from the injured list Tuesday, while Mark Leiter Jr. continues handling high-leverage situations. Yerry De Los Santos was promoted from Triple-A as Carlos Carrasco was designated for assignment. The bullpen configuration will likely remain flexible, particularly if Boone considers a PRP injection for Weaver should his recovery plateau.

Weaver’s loss represents a significant blow to the Yankees’ plans. Boone characterized it as “huge,” adding, “He’s been one of the best relievers in the sport now going back to last year. Hopefully, it’s something that over the long haul of the season serves him and us well.”

Weaver’s hamstring injury represents a significant challenge for a team with championship aspirations. While the Yankees remain optimistic, the uncertain return timeline creates legitimate concerns. If Williams struggles or other relief pitchers falter in crucial moments, Brian Cashman may need to pursue external solutions to stabilize the bullpen.

For now, the Yankees must rely on their depth while waiting for their breakout closer to return healthy.
