The New York Yankees must prepare for significant bullpen restructuring after closer Luke Weaver suffered a hamstring injury during Sunday night’s warmup routine in Los Angeles. The team plans to place him on the 15-day injured list. ESPN’s Jeff Passan indicates a potential four-to-six-week absence pending a complete medical assessment.
Weaver’s setback developed just before his scheduled ninth-inning appearance against the Dodgers. During post-warmup stretching, Weaver felt hamstring discomfort and was immediately withdrawn from action. Manager Aaron Boone confirmed the situation after the game.
“[Weaver] had finished warming up and then when he went to stretch, felt something in the middle of his hammy so we had to make a switch on the fly,” Boone explained.
New York Yankees closer Luke Weaver is expected be placed on the injured list after injuring his hamstring warming up Sunday night, sources tell ESPN. Weaver underwent an MRI and could miss four to six weeks, though the official timetable will be determined Tuesday.

The right-handed reliever avoided media interviews while receiving treatment before the team’s departure. His performance this season has been exceptional in his second Bronx campaign. Across 25 2/3 innings, Weaver compiled a remarkable 1.05 ERA with eight saves and 24 strikeouts. After assuming closing responsibilities in late April, he converted eight of nine save chances while surrendering only three runs all season.
Weaver’s Rise and the role swap with Williams

Weaver’s closing journey began in September 2024 when he replaced Clay Holmes. He concluded that campaign with 22 holds, four saves, and outstanding postseason numbers: 15 1/3 innings with merely three earned runs allowed. Last year, he paced all relievers with 84 innings pitched while maintaining a strikeout rate exceeding 31%.
The Yankees acquired former Brewers closer Devin Williams through offseason trade, originally planning to move Weaver into setup duty. Williams struggled initially, surrendering three or more runs in three of his first ten outings. Boone switched roles by April’s end, returning ninth-inning duties to Weaver.
With Weaver unavailable, the Yankees may rely heavily on Williams again. He has transformed his season with scoreless performances in 10 of his last 11 appearances. During this impressive stretch, Williams struck out nearly 40% of opposing batters, displaying the elite strikeout ability that made him Milwaukee’s dominant closer.
Boone plans to discuss bullpen arrangements before Tuesday’s series opener against the Guardians. Williams represents the most logical replacement option. “[Williams] pitches with an edge out there,” Boone noted last week. “Now into the rhythm and flow of the season and has gotten into a good groove.”
Backup plan: Cruz, Leiter Jr. among options

Right-hander Fernando Cruz returns from the injured list Tuesday, providing additional bullpen depth. Before shoulder inflammation sidelined him, Cruz established himself as a reliable high-leverage performer. He maintained a 2.66 ERA across 26 games with impressive strikeout potential.
Mark Leiter Jr. offers another ninth-inning possibility after strong recent performances. Leiter provides versatility and favorable matchup opportunities, giving Boone alternatives if he chooses not to designate a permanent closer during Weaver’s recovery.
Williams remains the preferred choice if his current excellence continues through the All-Star break. Weaver’s injury timeline—following the four-to-six-week projection—suggests a return near or after the midsummer classic.
Implications beyond Weaver’s injury

Weaver’s timing highlights a bullpen already managing injuries to Jonathan Loáisiga and Fernando Cruz this season. Despite these challenges, the Yankees‘ relief corps maintains elite status, ranking among league leaders in ERA and strikeout percentage.
The situation carries contractual significance as well. Weaver, now 31, enters free agency after this season. Despite a slight strikeout decline, his exceptional run prevention and late-inning reliability position him among the top free-agent relievers available this winter. A healthy return could secure a competitive multi-year contract, likely spanning three seasons, though probably not extending to four or five years.
Trade deadline watch
If Weaver’s rehabilitation encounters setbacks or bullpen performance suffers, the Yankees might pursue late-inning reinforcements before the trade deadline. With playoff expectations and Gerrit Cole still building up, with ongoing uncertainty in the starting rotation due to injuries to Marcus Stroman and Luis Gil, general manager Brian Cashman may seek insurance for protecting leads in crucial games.
The organization’s adaptability faces scrutiny over the coming weeks. At 34-20 with a comfortable AL East advantage, the Yankees have demonstrated resilience through adversity.
Weaver’s absence still transforms Boone’s late-game approach. He has served as both a statistical and emotional bullpen leader. His unavailability creates uncertainty in baseball’s most unpredictable situations.
The Yankees begin their Guardians series Tuesday with an urgent need to redesign their bullpen structure. Williams appears the immediate answer, but long-term planning may shift based on upcoming developments.
A mid-July Weaver return would provide sufficient time to reestablish elite closer status before free agency begins. Until then, the Bronx returns to complex bullpen management decisions.
