Trent Grisham’s glove, bat, and hustle make him the Yankees’ super catalyst in their 4-0 win over the Rays in Tampa.
What began as a footnote in the blockbuster Juan Soto trade has rapidly evolved into one of the Yankees’ most compelling storylines this spring. Trent Grisham, acquired primarily as outfield depth behind the star-studded trio of Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Jasson Domínguez, has transformed from an afterthought to essential in just 20 games of the 2025 season.
The defensive specialist is now commanding regular playing time through a remarkable offensive awakening that few saw coming when he arrived in the Bronx.
From role player to becoming lineup fixture
Grisham showcased his complete skillset in Sunday’s 4-0 shutout against Tampa Bay at Steinbrenner Field. Making his first appearance in the leadoff spot for New York, he ambushed the game’s opening pitch for his sixth home run of the young season. Later, he delivered the defensive play of the afternoon – a sprawling catch in right-center followed by a pinpoint throw that caught Danny Jansen straying off second base.

“He’s been doing incredible things,” Yankees captain Aaron Judge said. “Especially leading off the game with a homer and then making a diving play like that, he’s doing it all right now for us.”
The numbers validate Judge’s assessment. Through 20 contests, Grisham boasts a stellar .320/.420/.673 slash line with a 1.093 OPS, six home runs and 14 RBIs. His power surge places him just one homer behind Judge for the team lead – shocking production from a player whose offensive contributions had previously been modest at best.
Elite glove work, superior baseball IQ

While his newfound offensive prowess has grabbed headlines, Grisham’s defensive excellence remains his foundation. Sunday’s windy conditions at Steinbrenner Field created challenges that the Yankees’ player handled with characteristic poise.
With Max Fried working on a no-hitter in the fifth, Grisham’s diving grab on Jake Mangum’s slicing liner proved crucial. More impressive was his immediate awareness to pop up and fire a strike to second base, catching Jansen for an inning-ending double play that preserved the scoreless tie.
“Really good play,” said Cody Bellinger, who shifted to right field to make room for Grisham. “Really windy and he did a great job of getting to the ball. Not only that but picking up his head right away and making a great throw. It’s not easy to get up and make a perfect throw like that.”
Such instinctive playmaking has elevated Grisham beyond mere reliability to game-changing status. With several talented outfielders deserving time, manager Aaron Boone now faces the enviable challenge of distributing playing time optimally.
Grisham and Boone’s roster management challenge
Boone has responded to Grisham’s hot streak by finding creative ways to keep his bat and glove in the lineup. For Sunday’s contest, Judge served as a designated hitter, allowing him to patrol center while Bellinger manned right field.
“He’s been so good,” Boone said before the game. “Obviously, love the way he’s playing all around right now.”
In previous games, Grisham started while Domínguez and Bellinger each received rest days. With utility player Ben Rice sidelined by an elbow contusion, Boone’s outfield flexibility has become a strategic advantage – one made more valuable by Grisham’s emergence.

“The good thing is we have a lot of really good players and options out there right now,” Boone noted. “So try to continue to balance it the best I can, try to keep these guys all sharp and get them in there in the best situations possible.”
This approach has paid dividends. New York sits at 14-8, atop the AL East, with Grisham’s unexpected contributions playing a significant role in their early success.
The hitting transformation
Grisham’s offensive explosion represents a dramatic departure from his track record. Prior to 2025, he carried a career of .692 OPS across five seasons with San Diego and Milwaukee, including a troubling .198 batting average last year.
His current approach reflects fundamental changes. Grisham displays enhanced plate discipline, improved bat speed, and greater aggression on hittable early pitches – as evidenced by Sunday’s first-pitch homer.

Behind the scenes, New York’s hitting department, including assistant coach Rachel Balkovec, has reportedly focused on streamlining Grisham’s swing mechanics and refining his timing. While specific adjustments remain internal, the outcomes speak volumes.
This April alone, Grisham has collected more extra-base hits (10) than in any month since mid-2022. His strikeout rate has decreased significantly, and he’s driving the ball with authority to all fields.
Future Roster Implications
If Grisham sustains this performance level, the Yankees will soon face difficult personnel decisions. Once Domínguez and Rice return to full health, the organization must determine optimal playing time distribution and potential roster moves.
However, Grisham’s three-dimensional value – Gold Glove defense, impactful offense, and intelligent baserunning – makes him increasingly difficult to exclude from the everyday lineup. As the Yankees gear up for a challenging series against Houston and Baltimore, Grisham has transformed from luxury to necessity.
