The New York Yankees announced significant injury updates and roster adjustments just ahead of the 2025 Opening Day matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers. On Wednesday night, the team confirmed eight players officially placed on the injured list, reshaping their roster significantly as they approach the season opener in the Bronx.
Giancarlo Stanton headlines Yankees’ injury list

Giancarlo Stanton, the Yankees’ designated hitter and key offensive force, headlines the list of injured players. Stanton is dealing with epicondylitis—tendon tears—in both elbows, and his return remains indefinite. The injury has significantly impacted his ability to swing a bat, and little progress has been reported since spring training began in February.
Veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu joins Stanton on the injured list with a left calf strain. Initially slated to start at third base, LeMahieu’s uncertain recovery timeline leaves a notable gap in the Yankees’ lineup.
Multiple pitchers face early-season setbacks

The Yankees’ pitching staff faces substantial setbacks, with Clayton Beeter (right shoulder impingement), JT Brubaker (left rib fractures), Scott Effross (left hamstring strain), Ian Hamilton (viral illness), Jonathan Loáisiga (right elbow surgery recovery), and Clarke Schmidt (right rotator cuff tendinitis) all sidelined. Schmidt is expected back by the third week of the season.
The loss of ace Gerrit Cole for the entire 2025 season due to Tommy John surgery significantly reshapes the rotation. Left-hander Carlos Rodon steps into the Opening Day starter role against Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta.
Brian Cashman remains optimistic
Despite the roster upheaval, General Manager Brian Cashman expressed confidence in the team’s depth and talent, highlighting how new acquisitions and younger players stepped up during spring training.
“Obviously, the roster changes all the time,” Cashman said toward the close of spring training. “It’s certainly a different roster this year than how it ended last year. Some talented guys are rehabbing, but others have stepped up, providing comfort. We’re eager to see what this group can do.”
Yankees finalize bullpen amid injuries

To address bullpen injuries, the Yankees optioned right-handed pitcher Yerry De Los Santos to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Instead, Yoendrys Gomez and Brent Headrick secured bullpen roles. Gomez, a promising 25-year-old right-hander, impressed in spring, while Headrick, acquired off waivers from the Twins, demonstrated strong command and versatility.
The bullpen, led by closer Devin Williams, includes Luke Weaver, Ryan Yarbrough, Fernando Cruz, Tim Hill, and Mark Leiter Jr. Yarbrough was a late addition after opting out of a minor league deal with the Blue Jays.
Manager Aaron Boone, entering his eighth season, emphasized the adversity the team inevitably faces.
“Adversity is coming for you,” Boone often tells players and media. The Yankees have profoundly experienced this reality in 2025, with injuries reshaping the roster since the start of camp.
Despite setbacks, optimism remains high due to promising acquisitions and emerging talent. Veteran Paul Goldschmidt showed signs of returning to All-Star form, while Cody Bellinger appeared set to leverage Yankee Stadium’s short porch in right field.
Young talents like catcher Austin Wells, designated hitter Ben Rice, and outfielder Jasson Dominguez displayed significant potential. Wells excelled in the leadoff spot, Rice showcased newfound power from offseason conditioning, and Dominguez steadily improved in left field after initial defensive challenges.
Aaron Judge leads through challenges
Aaron Judge remains the cornerstone of the Yankees’ lineup and clubhouse, following a spectacular 2024 season with 58 home runs and 144 RBIs.
“Injuries are tough, especially hitting some big names,” Judge noted as spring training concluded in Miami. “But it’s also a great opportunity for young guys to step up and show what they’re made of.”
The Yankees aim to overcome these challenges, beginning Thursday, confident their reshaped roster can still compete at the highest level.
