Aaron Judge found a way to make the play count, even without making the catch.

The Yankees superstar was involved in a strange sixth-inning fan interference incident during New York’s 3-2 victory over Cleveland on Tuesday night. The American League MVP still managed to secure the out through replay review.

With two outs and the bases empty, Guardians center fielder Angel Martínez sent a foul ball toward the right-field wall. Judge tracked the ball perfectly and leaped at the precise moment. A fan reached over the railing and interrupted the play. The ball deflected off Judge’s mitt and dropped to the warning track.

The Yankees refused to accept the initial ruling.

New York immediately requested a replay challenge. They argued fan interference had occurred. Following a quick umpire consultation, the original call was reversed. Martínez was declared out. Judge earned his defensive out without completing the catch.

Judge handles the disruption with class composure

The reigning AL MVP showed no visible anger after the fan contact. He remained composed and allowed the replay process to work. The successful challenge ended the inning and became a key moment in a tightly contested game featuring excellent pitching and timely hitting. He even gave the ball to the fans.

Stadium officials did not remove the fan from the premises. This marked another recent high-profile interference case in professional baseball. The Yankees experienced two separate fan incidents during their 2024 World Series appearance. A similar situation involving Mike Trout and an Astros supporter occurred in April.

The Yankees captain had a similar experience at Angel Stadium, May 27, 2025, following interference from a fan wearing his jersey.

May excellence earns recognition

Judge received AL Player of the Month honors for May earlier Tuesday. The award recognized his exceptional offensive performance throughout the previous month. He entered the game leading baseball in batting average (.391), on-base percentage (.485), and slugging percentage (.764) during May.

This offensive explosion has positioned him as the early MVP favorite once again. The Yankees improved to 37-22 with Judge providing leadership both statistically and in the clubhouse.

His impact extends beyond traditional statistics into game-changing moments.

Captain Aaron Judge is with Yankees fans at Tampa, FL, during the Yankees spring training camp, in 2024.

Yankees maintain focus in close contest

The sixth-inning defensive ruling preserved New York’s narrow advantage. The Yankees combined clutch hitting with solid pitching to defeat Cleveland in the series opener.

Judge’s attempted catch represented more than just a potential out. It demonstrated how his combination of athleticism, composure, and baseball instincts can influence game outcomes. Even when spectators interfere with the action.

The play highlighted Judge’s ability to affect winning in multiple ways throughout any contest.
