Former Yankees reliever Octavio Dotel has died after a tragic roof collapse at a nightclub in Santo Domingo, according to multiple reports. He was 51.
Ex-Yankees pitcher among dozens killed in disaster

The roof of Jet Set nightclub in the Dominican Republic gave way during a packed merengue concert early Tuesday morning, killing at least 58 people and injuring more than 160. Dotel, a native of the Dominican Republic, was initially pulled from the rubble alive but died on the way to the hospital, according to Dominican outlet Diario Libre and journalist Héctor Gómez.
The former Yankees and Mets right-hander was one of several athletes and public figures reportedly in attendance. Another Dominican baseball player, Tony Blanco, also lost his life in the collapse.
Dotel’s Yankees stint was short but significant
Dotel pitched for 13 MLB teams from 1999 to 2013, including the New York Yankees in 2006. Though his stint in the Bronx was brief—just 14 games—Dotel was part of a bullpen reshuffle during a key stretch of the season. Known for his electric fastball and high strikeout rate, the righty was a dependable arm at his peak.
Over the course of his 15-year MLB career, Dotel posted a 3.78 ERA, 109 saves, and struck out more than 10 batters per nine innings. He began his career with the Mets in 1999 and was traded to the Houston Astros less than a year later. Between 2000 and 2004, he became one of the most reliable setup men in the league, working alongside stars like Billy Wagner and Brad Lidge.
A World Series champion and respected journeyman
Dotel’s crowning achievement came in 2011 when he helped the St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series. His final MLB appearance came with the Detroit Tigers in 2013. At the time of his retirement, Dotel held the record for playing with the most franchises in Major League Baseball.
Despite the constant movement, he remained highly respected throughout the league for his professionalism and perseverance. During Tuesday’s Mets-Marlins broadcast, longtime announcer Gary Cohen said: “Everyone who ever met Octavio loved him.”
Dotel’s road to the majors was shaped by hardship. His father was murdered during a robbery in the Dominican Republic. In a past interview, Dotel spoke about using baseball to stay focused in the aftermath of that loss. “I can do nothing if I go to the ballpark and think about him all the time,” he said. “I just have to keep playing hard and get what I’m looking for. I think God helps me because I’m here. I’m here and I appreciate it.”
Baseball world pays tribute
In a statement, the Houston Astros honored Dotel’s memory: “While in Houston, he was one of the top relievers in all of baseball and was a significant part of a dominant bullpen. A workhorse, Dotel’s club-leading 159 appearances in 2002-03 combined were second in the Majors in that span, during which he posted a 2.15 ERA.”
The Yankees have yet to release a statement, but fans across New York and beyond have taken to social media to mourn the loss of the ex-Yankees pitcher.
Jet Set nightclub says it is cooperating
The nightclub where the tragedy occurred released a statement expressing condolences and said it is working with investigators. “The loss of human life leaves us in a state of deep pain and dismay,” the venue said.
Octavio Dotel leaves behind a legacy of adaptability, resilience, and power pitching. While his time with the Yankees was limited, his role in the bullpen contributed to a season that demanded depth and experience. As one of the most traveled players in MLB history and a proud son of the Dominican Republic, Dotel made a lasting impact—on the field and in the lives of those who knew him.
