Un guante de béisbol que Babe Ruth utilizó en la temporada de 1927 se vendió en una subasta el sábado por 1,53 millones de dólares, lo que supone el precio más alto jamás pagado por un guante de béisbol. Superó con creces el récord anterior de 387.500 dólares establecido por el guante de Lou Gehrig en 1999.

El guante de Babe Ruth formaba parte originalmente de la colección de Jimmy Austin, que jugó para los Yankees y los St. Louis Browns durante 18 años, de 1909 a 1929. Ruth le dio el guante al propio Austin.

David Hunt, que dirige la casa de subastas que puso a la venta el guante, declaró que “este monumental guante de Babe Ruth es verdaderamente una de las piezas más históricas de su medio que jamás se hayan ofrecido en subasta pública.”

En una entrevista para el libro de 1966 “The Glory of Their Times”, que data de 1964, Austin habló de la valiosa pieza del equipo de béisbol. La temporada de 1927 fue épica y el equipo de los Yankees liderado por Babe Ruth ese año destaca como el mejor de la historia de la MLB. Según Susan Kolokoff, sobrina de Austin,

“Los recuerdos de mi infancia con mi tío Jim me son muy queridos. El guante había descansado en una caja durante los últimos 30 años hasta que conocimos su historia y escuchamos la increíble grabación de audio.”

La venta formaba parte de la 19ª subasta anual en directo del Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory.
