Atlanta – Derek Jeter believes the New York Yankees will reach the World Series. The Hall of Fame shortstop made his boldest prediction in years during FOX Sports’ All-Star Game postgame show on July 16.
“So this year I am going with the New York Yankees,” Jeter declared. “Yankees are going to beat the Cubs in the World Series. I’m going with the Yankees because [Brian] Cashman basically said that he’s all-in. So I expect the Yankees to do something at the trade deadline.”
The legend’s confidence stems from general manager Brian Cashman’s touted aggressive approach to the July 31 trade deadline. Despite a 53-43 record that trails Toronto by two games in the AL East, the Yankees maintain strong playoff odds and championship aspirations. The team appears unluckier than their talent suggests.

Yankees underperforming despite strong metrics
The numbers tell a different story than the standings. New York has outscored opponents 501 to 390, a run differential found among teams that have 59 wins at this point in the season, not 53. The Yankees show a Pythagorean record of 59-37, suggesting they should lead the AL East by three games.
Only the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves have seen as big a discrepancy between actual and expected wins this season. The Yankees have won eight fewer games than their BaseRuns projections indicate, the largest gap in MLB.
The timing problems persist in crucial moments. Major sluggers such as Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Paul Goldschmidt have stalled in key moments, batting a combined .159 with runners in scoring position in June.
Cashman has identified several areas requiring upgrades before the trade deadline. The Yankees lost ace Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery for the entire season. Clarke Schmidt underwent the same procedure. Luis Gil missed the first half with a lat strain.
“We’ve lost three starters out of our World Series rotation so far this year. So I’m going to see if I can find a starter,” Cashman said.
The general manager also targets bullpen help and infield upgrades.
“We’re going to go to town. We’re going to do everything we possibly can to improve ourselves and try to match up,” Cashman added.
The Yankees designated DJ LeMahieu for assignment, creating a clear need at third base.
Potential targets include Eugenio Suarez from Arizona and pitchers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly from the Diamondbacks. The Yankees seek multiple simultaneous moves rather than single-position fixes.
Judge’s MVP season fuels championship hopes
Aaron Judge provides the foundation for New York’s October dreams. The captain leads the American League in batting average (.355), on-base percentage (.462), hits (125) and OPS (1.194). He ranks second in home runs (35) and RBI (81).
Judge remains on pace for 60 home runs, potentially threatening his own AL record of 62. FanDuel lists him as the strong AL MVP favorite at -20000 odds. He earned AL Player of the Month honors for April, May and June.

“One player the Yankees can count on this season is Judge,” according to Yahoo Sports analysis. “He’s currently on pace for 59 home runs, but we’ve seen the Yankee Captain get on a homer streak that can threaten his AL home run record.”
The Yankees successfully pivoted after losing Juan Soto in free agency. Max Fried stepped up as the ace, leading the AL in wins (11) while posting a 2.43 ERA. Carlos Rodon finally meets expectations in his second season.
Rotation depth remains key concern
The Yankees’ rotation maintains a 3.69 ERA despite significant injuries. Will Warren shows promise as a rookie with a 96:31 strikeout-to-walk ratio, though his 4.66 ERA indicates inconsistency.
Luis Gil’s anticipated return provides hope. The 2024 AL Rookie of the Year completed his first rehab start, allowing one run over 3.1 innings with six strikeouts. Manager Aaron Boone views Gil’s return as “like a trade deadline acquisition.”
The Yankees need “2 good relief pitchers” according to internal analysis. Devin Williams and Luke Weaver anchor the bullpen, but depth remains questionable for a playoff run.
Jeter’s prediction adds pressure
The Captain’s public World Series prediction increases pressure on Cashman. Jeter referenced Baltimore’s trade deadline inactivity in 2024 as a cautionary tale.
“Last year I picked the Baltimore Orioles to go to the World Series. The reason why I picked them is I was looking forward to the trade deadline, Baltimore had a stacked minor-league system, I thought they were going to make a move, they didn’t do it, they didn’t win,” Jeter explained.
Alex Rodriguez joined Jeter’s optimism, picking the Yankees to beat the Dodgers in the World Series.
“There’s going to be a competition of the best front office that does the most bold moves in the trade deadline, and I’m going to go with the most resources: Yankees and Dodgers,” Rodriguez said.
Financial flexibility enables aggressive moves
The Yankees typically reserve payroll for deadline acquisitions. The organization remains always aggressive when they feel they have the chance to win.
“The Yankees will do everything they can to win their first World Series since 2009. The league’s most historic franchise is starved for a title,” MLB Trade Rumors reported.
The Bronx Bombers enter each season with championship expectations. This year appears no different despite early-season challenges.

October dreams remain intact
Jeter’s prediction reflects confidence in the Yankees’ championship window. The team maintains strong playoff odds despite roster challenges and divisional competition.
“The Yankees have a laundry list of moves they need to make,” a Yahoo Sports report noted. “Whatever moves Cashman makes, they’ll need to be significant if the Yanks hope to return to the World Series.”
The Yankees‘ current record reflects variance more than vulnerability. Bad timing and execution have masked what should be a dominant season. The underlying metrics suggest the team’s true talent will emerge in the second half.
The Captain’s bold prediction carries weight given his championship pedigree. If Cashman delivers the promised upgrades, Jeter’s World Series bet on the Yankees could prove prescient once again.
