CC Sabathia will be enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame this summer with a New York Yankees cap on his plaque, the Hall announced Monday. The decision cements his legacy in the Bronx, where he spent the majority of his 19-year career and became a key figure in the franchise’s recent history.

Sabathia joined the Yankees in 2009 after signing a lucrative free-agent deal, quickly establishing himself as the team’s ace. He led the majors in wins in each of his first two seasons in New York and was instrumental in securing the club’s 27th World Series title in 2009. Over 11 seasons in Pinstripes, he won 134 of his 251 career victories and recorded 1,700 of his 3,093 strikeouts. He is one of only three left-handed pitchers in MLB history to surpass 3,000 strikeouts, joining an elite group that underscores his dominance on the mound.

“The Yankees was a place that wanted me,” Sabathia said last month after learning of his election to the Hall of Fame. “I signed here as a free agent. I’ve been here now for 16 years. I’ve loved the organizations that I played on. I don’t think I’d be sitting here today if I wasn’t drafted by the Cleveland organization. I’m very thankful to Milwaukee for trading for me and having that run that I had there, but this is home. I found a home in the Bronx, and I don’t think I’ll ever leave this city.”

Sabathia began his career with Cleveland, where he spent eight seasons before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008. His brief stint in Milwaukee was electric, as he helped propel the team into the postseason for the first time in 26 years. However, his greatest impact came in New York, where he solidified himself as a leader on and off the field.

He will enter the Hall alongside Ichiro Suzuki, who will be enshrined with a Seattle Mariners cap, and Billy Wagner, who will represent the Houston Astros. The trio was elected by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) in January. They will be joined by Dick Allen (Philadelphia Phillies) and Dave Parker (Pittsburgh Pirates), who were selected by the Classic Baseball Era committee in December.

The official induction ceremony is set for Sunday, July 27, in Cooperstown, where Sabathia will take his place among baseball’s legends.
