As the baseball calendar inches closer to spring training in Tampa, the New York Yankees appear to be embracing a patient approach to their remaining roster questions. In a revealing conversation with the YES Network, General Manager Brian Cashman presented a picture of calculated restraint, particularly regarding the team’s situation at third base and backup catcher positions, suggesting that internal solutions might take precedence over market acquisitions.

The current Yankees blueprint for third base features an intriguing competition among several candidates: the versatile Oswaldo Cabrera, promising prospect Oswald Peraza, veteran DJ LeMahieu, and newcomer Jorbit Vivas. Adding another layer of complexity, Cashman indicated that Jazz Chisholm Jr. could factor into the mix, potentially splitting time between second and third base based on strategic matchups.

“I don’t know how it’s going to play out,” Yankees GM admitted. “I do think we can have one of these candidates emerge or multiple guys emerge into a platoon situation at worst, or a solo shot at best. If not, there’s always the marketplace to play around with as we move forward, too.”

While the Yankees executed several significant roster moves during December’s hot stove period, the infield market has continued to evolve, with various potential targets finding new homes. Despite ongoing speculation about the availability of Cardinals’ stalwart Nolan Arenado and the presence of budget-friendly free agents, Cashman’s comments reflect a Yankees’ preference for exploring internal possibilities before pursuing external additions.

“Obviously, between Peraza, Cabrera, DJ LeMahieu, Vivas, we’re going to have some guys taking some reps trying to earn a spot, whether it’s at second or third,” the Yankees general manager said. “The flexibility and athleticism that Jazz provides gives us the ample opportunity to play it out. I’ll be comfortable when somebody solidifies that, whether it’s a platoon situation or a solo shot.”

Infield Yankees chemistry dynamics present ongoing challenge

The Yankees’ acquisition of Jazz Chisholm last season initially targeted second base but encountered resistance when incumbent Gleyber Torres expressed his firm position on remaining at second base. Torres’ unequivocal statement, “I’m a second baseman. I play second,” created positional complications that continue to influence the team’s infield configuration.

As the Yankees approach spring training, questions persist about Torres’ potential value should third-base stability prove elusive. Cashman’s recent commentary suggests that spring performance could necessitate revisiting these positional assignments.

Backup catching role remains under evaluation

The search for Austin Wells‘ backup presents another area of focus for the Yankees’ brain trust. Cashman highlighted non-roster invitee Alex Jackson, acquired in the Jose Trevino trade package alongside reliever Fernando Cruz, as a potential solution. Jackson’s defensive prowess and prior major league experience position him as a serious contender for the role.

The Yankees’ catching depth extends beyond immediate options, with Cashman noting the emergence of promising prospects within the system. While specific names weren’t mentioned, J.C. Escarra‘s presence on the 40-man roster signals his potential involvement in the backup catcher conversation.

“I’m comfortable we have some guys that, with some growing pains, could be really good for us and could be really good for us right out of the gate,” Cashman stated.

Stroman situation remains fluid

On September 25, 2024, Marcus Stroman replaced the injured Nestor Cortes as the Yankees' starting pitcher against the Baltimore Orioles, in a crucial game as the team aimed to clinch the AL East title.

Marcus Stroman’s status as the Yankees’ projected sixth starter has generated trade speculation, particularly following his challenging second-half performance last season. However, Cashman offered a nuanced perspective on Stroman’s struggles, pointing to defensive shortcomings as a contributing factor.

“Ultimately, I feel like we as a team let him down with what we did behind him [defensively] in his starts,” Cashman said. “Not sure what can transpire. He’s here [in Tampa] and looking forward to him contributing like he did last year.”

While Stroman remains in the Yankees’ plans, the organization appears open to exploring opportunities should they materialize.

Yankees’ path forward

Despite maintaining flexibility for potential moves, Cashman’s messaging suggests a deliberate approach to roster completion as Opening Day approaches. The Yankees appear committed to leveraging spring training as an evaluation period for its internal talent pool before considering external acquisitions.

The strategy reflects a balanced approach to team building, emphasizing competition across multiple positions while maintaining the flexibility to pivot if necessary. The success of this methodology will become apparent as position battles unfold and roles crystallize during spring training.

This approach represents a calculated gamble on the Yankees’ part, betting on their player development system and existing talent pool to address current roster needs. As the team transitions into active spring training, the effectiveness of this strategy will be tested against the practical demands of fielding a competitive lineup in baseball’s most demanding market.
