NEW YORK — Austin Wells is heading toward the most demanding portion of the Yankees’ season with a major change already underway away from the field.
The Yankees catcher and longtime partner Caroline Nielson publicly announced Wednesday that they are engaged, sharing photographs of Wells proposing on one knee.
The announcement came through a collaborative Instagram post carrying a short caption: “forever and ever 🤍 9.3.26.”
The date revealed an important detail.
Wells apparently proposed Sept. 3, meaning the engagement itself occurred several weeks ago. The couple waited until Sept. 23, with the Yankees preparing for postseason baseball, to make the news public.
That timing produced an unusual intersection between one of Wells’ happiest personal milestones and one of the most challenging professional seasons of his young career.
Who is Caroline Nielson?
Nielson is a Las Vegas native who became a high-level collegiate equestrian athlete before her relationship with Wells entered the Yankees spotlight.
She attended Bishop Gorman High School, where Oklahoma State’s official biography says she belonged to the National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society, made the honor roll and completed more than 100 hours of community service. She graduated with a scholar’s diploma.
Nielson then joined Oklahoma State’s Cowgirl Equestrian program and competed in horsemanship.
Her strongest season in Stillwater came as a junior in 2021-22. She went 8-8, posted a career-high score of 79.5 against TCU and earned Most Outstanding Performer honors against Fresno State. She was also selected to the NCEA All-Academic First Team and Big 12 All-Academic First Team.
Oklahoma State listed finance as her major.
After four years with the Cowgirls, Nielson transferred to SMU for the 2023-24 season as a graduate student. SMU coach Carol Gwin called her a “wonderful person, great teammate, and an amazing athlete” when the program announced her addition.
Nielson delivered in her final collegiate season. She went 9-7 in horsemanship and finished 3-0 at the national championships, earning a spot on the NCEA All-Championship Team.
That year put Nielson on a national stage before baseball became central to her life.
That athletic background gives Wells and Nielson an obvious shared understanding of competition, travel and the pressure that comes with high-level sports.
Wells and Nielson became parents in 2026
The engagement is only the latest major development for the couple.
Wells and Nielson publicly announced in late 2025 that they were expecting their first child. The joint Instagram post featured the pair at Yankee Stadium, Wells holding a small Yankees jersey and Nielson displaying ultrasound images.
“Our biggest blessing & sweetest surprise,” Nielson wrote. “We can’t wait to meet our lil bug.”
Their daughter, Lucy Marie, arrived Jan. 28, according to reports at the time.
That family development also became connected to Wells’ baseball career. His initial uncertainty about playing for the Dominican Republic in the 2026 World Baseball Classic was tied in part to the expected birth of his daughter.
Once Lucy arrived, Wells joined the Dominican roster and represented the country through his maternal heritage.
Nielson later shared family images from the tournament, including Lucy dressed in Dominican colors. She wrote about how meaningful it was for their daughter to watch Wells represent the country. Wells responded to the post: “Those are my girls.”
The sequence helps explain why Wednesday’s engagement announcement carries more weight than a simple social-media update.
Wells and Nielson have already moved through several major family milestones together in less than a year.
Engagement comes during difficult Wells season
The personal celebration arrives at a complicated baseball moment for Wells.
Through Sept. 22, the 27-year-old was batting .185 with a .287 on-base percentage and .324 slugging percentage over 120 games. He had 13 home runs and 31 RBIs.
Those numbers are well below his 2025 production, when he hit 21 home runs and drove in 71 runs.
There have been some late signs of improvement.
Baseball Savant lists Wells at .200/.357/.400 in September through Sept. 22, with three home runs during the month. He also homered Sept. 19 in Arizona.
The Yankees still value what Wells provides behind the plate, where receiving, game planning and managing a pitching staff take on even greater importance in October.
That was a major theme in his 2025 postseason as well.
Wells started all seven Yankees playoff games, and manager Aaron Boone publicly praised the trust New York’s pitchers had in him.
Now he heads toward another postseason with his offensive numbers under scrutiny and significant responsibility behind the plate.
A personal milestone before October
That makes the timing of the engagement announcement notable.
The proposal itself took place Sept. 3, before the Yankees reached the final weeks of their postseason push. Wells and Nielson kept the moment private for almost three weeks before sharing it publicly.
For Nielson, the announcement also brings renewed attention to a background that stretches well beyond being the partner of a Yankees player.
She competed five seasons in major college equestrian programs, earned national-level honors, built a strong academic record and became a mother earlier this year.
Now she and Wells are preparing for another major step together.
The wedding can wait.
For the moment, Wells has October baseball directly in front of him, while Nielson enters the Yankees postseason spotlight with a new title: his fiancée.
Yankees teammates react to Wells engagement
The announcement quickly attracted reactions from people around the Yankees and Major League Baseball.
Ryan McMahon, George Lombard Jr., former Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres and several other players were among those who liked the post, according to Heavy.
Ashley Rodón, wife of Yankees starter Carlos Rodon, also responded to the news, calling the proposal “the best off day in the history of off days.”
There has been no public announcement regarding a wedding date.
For Wells, the personal news arrives as the Yankees prepare to move from a grinding regular season into an October environment where every pitch behind the plate will carry added weight.
New York entered Thursday at 90-67 and in control of the top American League wild-card position, putting the club on course to host its opening playoff series.
Wells figures to remain directly involved in those plans.
For the Yankees, the next question is what Wells can provide once those plans begin.
