New York – Aaron Boone’s casual comment Saturday might have dramatically altered the Yankees’ July trade strategy.

The manager described recovering right-hander Luis Gil as “kind of maybe one of those trade-deadline adds” before New York’s dominant 9-0 victory over Baltimore. The phrase seemed offhand but carries significant implications for the franchise’s approach to roster building.

“Obviously, what he could bring, would definitely be a good shot in the arm and maybe one of those trade deadline adds,” the Yankees manager told.

With the Yankees struggling through June while pursuing American League East supremacy, Gil’s pending return now appears central to their deadline planning. Boone’s words suggest internal reinforcement rather than external acquisition.

“It is still a ways off, but yes, obviously, what he could bring would definitely be a good shot in the arm,” Boone said. “And kind of maybe one of those trade-deadline adds.”

Gil’s recovery reaches critical milestone

The 27-year-old Gil hasn’t pitched since late March due to a severe lat strain. Saturday marked his biggest rehabilitation step yet — throwing 20 pitches during live batting practice against actual hitters for the first time since the injury.

Gil’s reaction was overwhelmingly positive about his progress.

“I felt really good out there,” Gil said. “It’s been a process. You heal little by little. Felt good to get on the mound and face some hitters.”

Boone reported encouraging signs from the session. Gil’s fastball registered 95-96 mph while his changeup looked sharp. More importantly, his mechanics appeared fluid and natural.

“It looked every bit of that,” Boone said of the velocity readings. “The metrics on the four-seam were really good, too. He was in control of himself, free and easy.”

No firm return date exists, but Boone suggested late July or early August represents a realistic target. The Yankees typically require pitchers to reach 75-80 pitches before returning to game action. That milestone demands additional live sessions plus minor league rehabilitation starts.

“Now we start to build. Build lives, pitch counts, and eventually rehab games,” Boone explained. “It’s been a slow buildup, but it’s gone well every step of the way.”

Internal solution rather than external addition

Gil dominated during his 2024 breakout campaign. He posted a 15-7 record with a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 171 strikeouts across 151.2 innings. Those numbers earned him AL Rookie of the Year recognition while establishing him as a cornerstone piece.

Boone’s “deadline add” characterization doesn’t eliminate trade possibilities but reshapes expectations. Rather than pursuing expensive veteran arms, the Yankees could rely on Gil as their primary rotation upgrade.

This shift could influence general manager Brian Cashman’s July 31 strategy. New York sits 44-32 atop the AL East despite recent struggles. The team has lost seven of nine games while posting a .700 OPS over 15 days — the ninth-worst in baseball during that stretch.

Offensive reinforcement might now supersede pitching needs if Gil returns successfully.

Gil maintains positive mindset through setback

The right-hander’s rehabilitation mentality has remained steady throughout the lengthy process. After missing all of 2023 recovering from Tommy John surgery, Gil anchored New York’s rotation in 2024 while Gerrit Cole dealt with injury issues.

This latest setback tested his patience again without breaking his resolve.

“Your mentality has to be very strong in order to go through it,” Gil said. “But that has always been the focus — to go through it and get back as soon as possible.”

Saturday’s live session featured bullpen catcher Peter Serruto and staffer Ryan McLaughlin. Gil struck out both former players twice each, prompting Boone to call it an “important box to check.”

The organization remains appropriately cautious. Boone emphasized that future steps — including additional live work and minor league assignments — will depend on Gil’s response and comfort level. The timeline stays flexible while the stakes remain enormous.

Rotation stability creates trade flexibility

Gil’s return would join a rotation featuring Clarke Schmidt’s remarkable 25⅓ scoreless innings streak, plus Carlos Rodón and Max Fried. That depth might allow the Yankees to redirect deadline resources toward their struggling offense instead of pitching.

Emerging options like J.T. Brubaker and Will Warren provide additional depth. With Cole sidelined for the season following Tommy John surgery, Gil represents the missing piece for a complete rotation without sacrificing prospects or payroll space.

“He was so important for us [last year], and I think he went through a lot of good growth moments, too,” Boone said. “Now going through an injury like this — not surgical, but significant — that can be a learning thing for a young player.”

Fans expect Yankees to seek trade despite internal options

Boone’s comments don’t guarantee Yankee’s inactivity before July 31. Giancarlo Stanton’s DH-only status, DJ LeMahieu’s inconsistent production, and offensive volatility beyond Aaron Judge create clear upgrade opportunities.

The club could pursue outfield help or contact-oriented hitters to balance their approach. But Gil’s progress provides crucial flexibility by potentially eliminating rotation concerns.

This development could steer Cashman away from expensive pitching targets. Instead, resources might focus on position players who address more pressing needs.

Gil hasn’t returned yet, but momentum is building. Boone’s confidence reflects an organizational belief in their internal solution over external alternatives.

Should Gil’s rehabilitation continue smoothly, the Yankees may have already secured their most significant “deadline addition” without trading a single prospect. The potential rotation upgrade could reshape their entire July strategy while maintaining prospect capital for future moves.
