The Yankees’ starting rotation woes intensified Monday as Clarke Schmidt was pulled from his scheduled appearance due to persistent shoulder discomfort. With New York already navigating a depleted pitching staff, manager Aaron Boone’s guarded comments following the announcement only amplified concerns about Schmidt’s condition as the regular season approaches.
Yankees proceeding with caution
In the aftermath of Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Pittsburgh, Boone disclosed that Schmidt was experiencing lingering discomfort and hadn’t recovered properly from his previous outing. Though Boone indicated no immediate plans for diagnostic imaging, he acknowledged the decision to sideline Schmidt was preventative.
“Not bouncing back as well as he wanted to,” Boone said at Steinbrenner Field. “I think we’re just being cautious with it. But he’s not making his start, so there’s at least that concern.”
Instead of facing Toronto as originally planned, Schmidt will throw a controlled bullpen session on Monday, with his progression determined by how his shoulder responds to this modified workload.
Boone downplays severity

Despite the evident concern, Boone attempted to minimize the situation when questioned about the potential for a more serious underlying issue.
“I may be misstating it,” Boone said. “I don’t think they feel the need that there’s testing right now. I think it’s just at this point, hopefully being cautious with it.”
While Boone’s assessment offers modest reassurance, recent history suggests shoulder issues often prove more complicated than initially indicated. The Yankees will closely monitor Schmidt’s condition in the coming days, as his health could dictate how the organization navigates its increasingly precarious rotation situation.
Rotation depth severely tested

This development hits at a particularly vulnerable moment for the Yankees’ pitching corps. The club is already navigating the absence of staff ace Gerrit Cole, who underwent Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire season, while Luis Gil remains sidelined until at least June recovering from a lat strain. The situation is further complicated by Chase Hampton’s Tommy John procedure and JT Brubaker’s rib fractures.
Schmidt, with his own history of health issues, had already experienced a spring training delay stemming from back tightness. This latest setback raises legitimate questions about his readiness to assume his projected role as the rotation’s third starter.
With Schmidt’s status uncertain, the Yankees’ already thin pitching resources face additional strain. If he requires extended recovery time, Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco—previously competing for the fifth rotation spot—might both find themselves in the starting five by default. This scenario would elevate Allan Winans to next-man-up status should further injuries materialize.
“Obviously at this point, with some of the attrition we’ve had, not something we want to push,” Boone said regarding Schmidt’s shoulder soreness.
Promise now clouded by uncertainty
Before this recent concern, Schmidt represented a critical component of New York’s rotation plan. His 2023 campaign—his most durable to date—included 32 starts and 159 innings with a 4.64 ERA. He followed with an impressive beginning to 2024, posting a 2.52 ERA with 67 strikeouts across 60 ²/₃ innings through his first 11 starts before a lat strain sidelined him for over three months.
Upon returning in September, he concluded the season strongly with a 2.85 ERA and made three postseason starts, surrendering seven earned runs over 12 innings. These performances had secured him greater prominence in the Yankees’ 2025 rotation blueprint.
However, following a difficult Grapefruit League debut last week—yielding three runs on four hits with four strikeouts in just 1 ²/₃ innings—Schmidt’s latest setback arrives at a particularly inopportune moment for a Yankees team already scrambling for rotation solutions.
Contingency plans taking shape

Should Schmidt require additional recovery time, the Yankees may need to reconfigure their rotation strategy with Opening Day rapidly approaching. Boone and the front office could explore several alternatives:
- Carlos Carrasco: The veteran right-hander, in camp on a minor-league contract, has shown encouraging signs this spring and could claim a rotation spot by necessity.
- Will Warren: New York’s top pitching prospect has impressed throughout spring training and appears ready for a major league opportunity.
- Brent Headrick: The left-hander has built up to 50 pitches this spring and will replace Schmidt at the start of Monday, giving the Yankees another evaluation of his capacity in a multi-inning role.
With less than two weeks until Opening Day, Schmidt’s health status could substantially alter the Yankees’ immediate outlook. His availability remains crucial to stabilizing a rotation already depleted by significant losses.
Path forward amid doubts
The Yankees entered spring training harboring championship aspirations, but a cascade of injuries has left them starting pitching dangerously thin. Schmidt’s situation, though not yet confirmed as severe, underscores the fragility of their current pitching depth.
With Cole already sidelined for the season and Schmidt now raising health concerns, general manager Brian Cashman may need to reassess available options, internally or via trade, before Opening Day arrives.
For now, attention focuses on Schmidt’s Monday bullpen session, as Yankees supporters anxiously await positive news amid an already tumultuous spring.
