As Opening Day approaches, the New York Yankees are exploring a radical departure from traditional lineup construction, preparing to install Paul Goldschmidt, the former MVP typically deployed in run-producing slots, into the leadoff position against left-handed pitching.

Jack Curry of YES Network reports that Yankees skipper Aaron Boone is seriously weighing the option of giving Goldschmidt first-at-bat duties when facing southpaws, a role the veteran has never occupied during his extensive major league career. This unexpected adjustment forms part of a comprehensive lineup recalibration as the Yankees navigate a roster without Juan Soto, Gleyber Torres, Jose Trevino, and temporarily without Giancarlo Stanton.

During a recent podcast conversation, Boone indicated that Austin Wells would assume leadoff responsibilities against right-handers, while Goldschmidt would handle the role against lefties—potentially beginning with Saturday’s matchup against Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo.

Strategy behind Goldschmidt’s leadoff consideration

The potential repositioning of Goldschmidt atop the batting order stems from strategic analysis rather than necessity. Though the 36-year-old has never batted first in the majors, his career .381 on-base percentage and .366 OBP against left-handers in 2024 present an appealing combination of contact skills and plate discipline. Last season, he registered a 134 wRC+ versus southpaws while maintaining a disciplined 16.8% strikeout rate and drawing walks at a 9.6% pace.

With Boone committed to slotting Aaron Judge second, the Yankees seek a leadoff presence who minimizes baserunning risks and maximizes Judge’s opportunities with runners aboard. Goldschmidt’s expertise, bat control, and consistent on-base ability represent an ideal match—conventional wisdom notwithstanding.

They don’t want guys getting picked off with Judge at the plate Boone explained in an interview, addressing why speed-oriented options like Jazz Chisholm Jr. or Anthony Volpe might not be preferred alternatives.

Breaking leadoff traditions in the Bronx

The Yankees have increasingly embraced analytics-driven strategies, but this approach marks one of Boone’s most progressive moves yet. The organization has never started a catcher in the leadoff position during regular-season play but intends to do precisely that with Austin Wells against right-handed pitching in 2025.

Wells’ spring performance has validated this experiment. Through 13 exhibitions, the second-year backstop is batting .311 with three homers from the leadoff spot. His disciplined approach at the plate—characterized by minimal chase tendencies and frequent walks—creates precisely the challenging at-bat that pressures pitchers, especially with Judge on deck.

Across 406 career plate appearances against right-handers, Wells has produced a 115 wRC+ while walking at a 10.3% clip. These metrics, combined with his ability to capitalize on early-count mistakes, position him for potential success ahead of Judge, despite limited baserunning impact.

Goldschmidt finds form as Spring Training concludes

After briefly sidelined with lower back discomfort, Goldschmidt is scheduled to return Saturday against Philadelphia. He assured reporters Friday that his back feels “very close to 100%,” alleviating concerns about his readiness for the season opener.

His spring performance has gained momentum at an opportune time. Goldschmidt carries a .688 slugging percentage and 170 wRC+ through 13 spring contests, without a single strikeout in his previous five appearances. The Yankees acquired him this offseason on a one-year, $12 million agreement, wagering on his continued power production—particularly against left-handed pitching.

With Stanton sidelined indefinitely and few established right-handed power threats on the roster, Goldschmidt’s contribution becomes increasingly vital—not solely as a potential leadoff batter but as a primary run-producer against left-handed starting pitchers.

A lefty-heavy lineup demands balance

The unusual strategy partly addresses roster composition realities. The current Yankees configuration features predominantly left-handed hitters, including Cody Bellinger, Austin Wells, Jasson Domínguez, and Oswaldo Cabrera, all expected to feature regularly. While Goldschmidt, Judge, and Chisholm provide right-handed and switch-hitting alternatives, New York’s offensive success will require tactical lineup optimization to avoid vulnerability against lefties.

Against right-handed pitching, Wells leading off offers a non-traditional, on-base-focused game opener. Against southpaws, Goldschmidt’s combination of power and patience brings a veteran presence to establish the tone, even as his leadoff assignment would have seemed improbable in previous seasons.

Where this leaves Volpe, Chisholm, and others

The Yankees nation is delighted to see the new-found chemistry between Anthony Volpe and Jazz Chisholm, Jr., during the 2025 Spring Training.
NYY

Perhaps most surprising in this strategic shift is who won’t occupy the leadoff position. Volpe, with his speed, and Chisholm, who tallied 28 stolen bases with Miami last season, would traditionally merit leadoff consideration. However, Boone has articulated his philosophy clearly: baserunning aggression ahead of Judge presents an unnecessary risk.

The Yankees‘ revised vision for lineup construction emphasizes plate discipline and pitch recognition over speed, ensuring their premier slugger Judge frequently bats with runners on base and minimal risk of double plays or failed steal attempts.

Season-opening projection

The Yankees commence their 2025 campaign on March 27 at Yankee Stadium hosting the Milwaukee Brewers, with right-hander Freddy Peralta scheduled to start. Expect Wells to lead off, followed by Judge and Goldschmidt. When facing left-handed starters later in the series, Boone likely will deploy Goldschmidt atop the order, potentially for the first time in his 14-year major league career.

The strategy’s longevity depends on early results. But within a lineup featuring numerous new faces, injury concerns, and evolving expectations, the Yankees are embracing innovative thinking to energize their offense from the opening pitch.
