TORONTO — A wave of offseason drama has gripped both the United States and Canada after a Toronto insider’s report linked Bo Bichette to the New York Yankees, sparking heated debate across baseball circles.
What began as a column in the Toronto Sun quickly evolved into one of the most talked-about offseason rumors, raising questions about whether the Blue Jays’ star shortstop might one day trade his blue jersey for Yankee pinstripes.
Toronto insider links Bichette to Yankees

Toronto columnist Steve Simmons set off the controversy on November 9 when he suggested Bichette, who is entering free agency, may have quietly expressed interest in joining the Yankees.
“Bichette told everyone who would listen that he wants to stay a Blue Jay as free agency approaches,” Simmons wrote. “He said that publicly while quietly telling some people he wouldn’t mind playing in New York in the future. The immediate future.”
The timing of the claim added to the shock. Toronto had just fallen to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a heartbreaking Game 7 of the World Series, and emotions were still raw. For Blue Jays fans, the idea that their shortstop might be eyeing the Yankees felt like a betrayal. For Yankees fans, it was an unexpected spark of excitement at the start of the winter rumor mill.
Bichette has not commented publicly on the report, and his representatives have remained silent. Many Toronto fans and media figures, however, have dismissed the story outright. On social media, users called Simmons’ piece “total BS,” with one viral post claiming that Bichette “values privacy and loyalty.”
Blue Jays extend $22 million offer
While speculation spread, Toronto moved quickly to make its stance clear. The Blue Jays extended a $22 million qualifying offer to Bichette for the 2026 season, showing a strong intent to keep him long term. Under league rules, Bichette has until November 18 to accept or decline the offer, which allows him to gauge interest from other clubs while still negotiating with Toronto.

General manager Ross Atkins confirmed the team’s desire to re-sign Bichette. “We will be in on his market,” Atkins said. “He’s a core part of our future.”
Bichette, 27, remains one of baseball’s most consistent shortstops. In 2025, he hit .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs while helping lead Toronto to its first World Series appearance in over 30 years. His leadership alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr. defined the Blue Jays’ identity, making his potential exit a painful prospect for fans.
Why the Yankees are watching closely
The Yankees’ rumored interest stems largely from roster needs. Starting shortstop Anthony Volpe underwent shoulder surgery in October and is expected to miss the start of the 2026 season. That has led to speculation that New York could consider Bichette as a replacement or long-term upgrade.
“With Anthony Volpe undergoing shoulder surgery that will keep him out for the start of the season, the Yankees can reassess the shortstop position,” MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported. “Jazz Chisholm Jr. is under control for one more season, so the Yankees could use Bichette at shortstop in 2026, then move either Bichette or Volpe to second base if Chisholm leaves as a free agent.”
The Yankees, who won 94 games in 2025 but fell to the Blue Jays in the Division Series, are prioritizing lineup upgrades. Manager Aaron Boone has already emphasized the need for better contact hitting and defensive versatility, both of which Bichette could provide.
Insider’s report triggers fan backlash
Despite Simmons’ assertion, fans in Toronto were quick to defend their shortstop’s loyalty. Bichette has repeatedly stated that he wants to stay in Toronto, expressing pride in helping the Blue Jays return to postseason prominence. Simmons, however, suggested there may be more beneath the surface.
“Maybe he stays. Or maybe he doesn’t. Or maybe he already knows where he wants to be,” he wrote.
The controversy deepened when Simmons described Bichette’s postgame embrace with bench coach Don Mattingly after the World Series loss.
“After Will Smith’s home run and the World Series-clinching double play silenced all of Canada, Bo Bichette walked behind Don Mattingly and held on to the long-time major-leaguer,” he wrote. “Probably knowing that this was Mattingly’s last day as a Blue Jay. Maybe knowing, in his own mind, that this was his last day, as well.”
Many fans accused Simmons of reading too much into the emotional moment. Others said the writer had manufactured a story during a slow news week.
What a Yankees deal could mean
If Toronto fails to reach an agreement with Bichette, he would instantly become one of the most sought-after free agents. His career batting average of .303 and reliable defense make him one of baseball’s premier infielders. Analysts note that his contact-driven approach and opposite-field power could play well at Yankee Stadium.
But signing Bichette would not come cheap. Industry projections suggest the 27-year-old could command a contract worth over $200 million. For the Yankees, who already have major financial commitments to Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, and Jazz Chisholm Jr., that would require strategic payroll maneuvering.
Still, Yankees insiders believe the front office will explore every avenue to strengthen the infield. Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote that New York plans to be “aggressive” this winter to keep up with its American League East rivals.
“They must spend just to keep up with the rest of the powerful AL East,” Nightengale said. “And will either bring back Cody Bellinger or sign Kyle Tucker.”
Blue Jays and Yankees on collision course
While Toronto remains focused on re-signing Bichette, the Yankees’ rumored interest has already stirred tension between the two clubs. Blue Jays supporters have accused New York fans of fueling false narratives, while Yankees followers see Bichette as another high-profile player destined to thrive in pinstripes.
The Blue Jays, fresh off a World Series run, are expected to use their postseason revenue boost to keep their roster intact. Still, the rumor linking Bichette to the Yankees has added intrigue to an already intense rivalry.
For now, Toronto holds the upper hand. Bichette has yet to make any move toward leaving, and his public comments continue to stress loyalty to the Blue Jays. Yet as long as uncertainty remains, Yankees fans will be watching — and waiting — for any sign that the star shortstop could be tempted to join the Bronx.
