The Yankees vs. Royals game featured two AL MVP favorites Aaron Judge and Bobby Witt, Jr., and all eyes were on them. But it was Yankees catcher Austin Wells who stole the spotlight Monday night at Yankee Stadium.
Austin Wells delivered a game-changing three-run homer in the seventh inning, lifting the Yankees to a 10-4 win over the Royals in the series opener. As the ball sailed into the right-field seats, the backstop tossed his bat toward the dugout in celebration, circling the bases with the kind of enthusiasm that resonated throughout the Yankees lineup.
Reflecting on his big moment, Austin Wellsells admitted he was overwhelmed, losing track of his surroundings as emotions took over. Frustrated by his earlier at-bats, he found a release in the home run, a pivotal swing that shifted the game’s momentum.
“I was jacked. I blacked out,” the Yankees catcher told after the game. “I was pissed off about how the prior at-bats in the game had gone. And so it was just kind of a big release of emotion. I get to watch two of the best in the game go to work right in front of me. It’s a lot of fun, and it’s a good challenge for me.”
The victory bolstered the Yankees‘ position atop the American League East, pushing their record to 83-61 and extending their lead over Baltimore to 1.5 games with 18 contests left in the regular season.
Austin Wells outperforms MVP frontrunners
While Judge remains the frontrunner for the AL MVP, Austin Wells is emerging as a strong candidate for AL Rookie of the Year. The 25-year-old has surged into contention late in the season, particularly since the All-Star break, hitting .295 with a .511 slugging percentage and a .891 OPS across 39 games. Wells’ performance has placed him in the conversation alongside Baltimore’s Colton Cowser.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed Austin Wells’ status as a top rookie contender, expressing surprise at his development. Boone acknowledged that Wells’ recent success was unexpected, as the rookie’s consistent performance has earned him the cleanup spot behind Judge.
“No, not to this level,” the Yankees skipper told. “Not to the level he’s been at now for a couple of months — hitting in the four-hole behind Aaron Judge, and for good reason. He’s been a middle-of-the-order hitter for 2-3 months now. We’ve all seen that, witnessed that.”
Austin Wells has embraced his role as the Yankees’ reliable No. 4 hitter, finding himself in prime position behind Juan Soto and Judge. He relishes the opportunity to learn from two of the game’s best, describing it as both rewarding and demanding.
Since Jose Trevino went down with a left quad strain before the All-Star break, Austin Wells has seized his opportunity, emerging as one of the top catchers in the American League, both offensively and defensively.
Austin Wells now leads AL catchers with a 121 wRC+, surpassing Kansas City’s Salvador Perez and making him 21% better than the league-average hitter. Defensively, he’s second only to Seattle’s Cal Raleigh, per Statcast metrics, with his strong pitch-framing and blocking playing a crucial role.
His offensive impact was on full display Monday night, as Yankees manager Aaron Boone praised his consistency in the middle of the order over the past few months.
The Yankees, trailing 4-3 entering the seventh inning, staged a late rally, scoring seven runs in their final two frames. They plated four runs in the seventh against Royals reliever James McArthur and added three more in the eighth off Chris Stratton.
Starting pitcher Carlos Rodón, who fanned nine over six innings, highlighted Austin Wells’ electrifying second half, noting how his bat has dominated games.
Jasson Domínguez, the Yankees’ top prospect recently recalled, was thrilled to see Austin Wells’ performance up close. Having shared the field with Wells during his first major league stint last September, Domínguez wasn’t surprised by the catcher’s success, calling Wells’ home run “incredible.”
“I’m not ‘impressed’ — because I knew what he was capable of,” the Martian told. “But obviously he’s doing great. I mean, that homer today was insane.”
Austin Wells added to his night with a two-out RBI double off the left-field wall in the eighth, finishing with two hits in five at-bats, a home run, a double, and four RBIs.
