As the New York Yankees continue their preparations for the upcoming season, the spotlight has fallen on Anthony Volpe, who encountered a challenging preseason outing at the plate. Amidst the flurry of spring training activities in Dunedin, Florida, on Monday, March 12, some observations and performances emerged, offering insights into the team’s dynamics and individual player progressions.

Despite an otherwise impressive spring, Anthony Volpe failed to record a hit and struck out three times against the Toronto Blue Jays. The game concluded with a score of 8-1 in favor of Toronto, highlighting what seems to be a flawed strategy.

Anthony Volpe wants to improve in 2024

Last week, speaking to NJ.com, Anthony Volpe expressed his dedication, stating that he puts in the work every day and “definitely feels” that improvement is on the horizon.

Anthony Volpe’s goals have been aimed at reaching the highest echelons of sports as he dons the Yankees’ iconic shirt for another year. “I still have everything to earn. The difference is I know the guys. This time last year, even when I played, I really wasn’t playing with (the regulars) and it wasn’t until the very end when I immersed with the rest of the team,” he reflected.

In 2021, playing low A and high A ball, Anthony Volpe had his first full season as a minor leaguer, hitting .294 with 35 doubles, 27 homers, and 101 strikeouts in 513 plate appearances. These numbers are more aligned with what Volpe envisions for himself as a big leaguer.

As soon as his rookie season came to a close, preparations for Anthony Volpe’s sophomore year began, according to the most prominent sources. Despite playing in 159 of the Yankees’ 162 games last year and starting 150 times, Volpe, a 22-year-old who will turn 23 in April, chose to forego much offseason downtime. Returning home to Watchung after residing in Manhattan during the season, he focused on refining his swing and hitting approach.

Reflecting on discussions with Yankees hitting coaches from the previous season and analyzing footage of his at-bats, Volpe identified the need to eliminate the uppercut that had become ingrained in his swing. By the time the Yankees hired a new hitting coach in November, he was already making strides in this direction.

On Tuesday, during the game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Oswaldo Cabrera, adorned with a newly assigned number, 33, showcased his defensive versatility by seamlessly transitioning to third base. Cabrera’s agility and quick reflexes were on full display as he expertly fielded a sharply hit ground ball from Alejandro Kirk, initiating an impressive double play that underscored his defensive prowess.

However, the attention swiftly turned to Anthony Volpe, the promising Yankees shortstop prospect, whose struggles at the plate became apparent during Tuesday’s practice session. Despite exhibiting promise throughout the spring training period, Volpe faced adversity as he navigated through a winless performance, going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. This downturn in offensive productivity serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of baseball and the challenges players encounter as they strive for consistency and improvement.

In contrast to Anthony Volpe‘s difficulties, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, now a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, delivered a standout defensive play at third base. Demonstrating his defensive acumen, Kiner-Falefa executed a remarkable diving stop on a sharply hit ground ball from Jahmai Jones, swiftly regaining his footing to make a precise throw to second base, securing a crucial force out and extinguishing a potential scoring threat.

Looking ahead to the team’s schedule, according to the New York Post anticipation surrounds Carlos Rodon‘s impending start as the Yankees prepare to face off against the Boston Red Sox at Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday. Rodon’s presence on the mound presents an opportunity for the team to evaluate pitching depth and assess player readiness as Opening Day draws nearer.

As the preseason unfolds, the Yankees find themselves navigating a myriad of challenges, from individual player performances to injury concerns, exemplified by Gerrit Cole’s recent elbow MRI. The team’s resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping their success during the regular season.

Amidst the highs and lows of spring training, the Yankees remain steadfast in their pursuit of excellence, guided by a collective determination to overcome obstacles and achieve their ultimate goal of postseason contention. With each preseason game serving as a stepping stone towards the competitive rigors of the regular season, every player’s contribution and development are integral to the team’s success. As Anthony Volpe and his teammates continue to refine their skills and refine their approach, they remain committed to the relentless pursuit of greatness on the diamond.
