The New York Yankees have plenty to be excited about with Anthony Volpe, their young and talented shortstop. Now entering his second season at the ripe age of 22, he holds the promise of substantial improvement. The exact path his performance will take remains to be seen, but baseball experts like The Athletic’s Jim Bowden have already identified him as a player primed for a significant breakout in 2024.

Despite entering the lineup just last year, his rookie season left a positive impression. While his initial offensive numbers might not have been eye-popping, Anthony Volpe flashed undeniable potential and even secured a prestigious Gold Glove Award.

Analyst foresees Anthony Volpe catching fire for 2024 Yankees

Yankees' rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe wins the Gold Glove Award in his very first season in 2023.

Bowden noted that Anthony Volpe’s rookie campaign was impressive, citing statistics such as 21 home runs, 24 stolen bases, and a 3.3 WAR according to Baseball Reference. Despite batting only .209 and having a low on-base percentage of 28 percent, he managed to perform admirably in front of demanding fans and within a challenging market for rookies. Bowden highlighted Anthony Volpe’s professionalism, work ethic, and evident baseball intelligence throughout the season.

Bowden suggested that Anthony Volpe showed great adaptability and anticipates he will perform better against breaking balls in the upcoming season, particularly after struggling against them last year. If Volpe can raise his batting average to the range of .240 to .250, Bowden believes his home run count could increase to 24 or 25, and his stolen base total could potentially surpass 30. Despite scoring 62 runs in the previous season, Bowden expects Anthony Volpe to score more this year, especially if he bats ninth for the Yankees, with DJ LeMahieu, Juan Soto, and Aaron Judge batting behind him.

In 2024, the Yankees team is expected to be in a more favorable position compared to the previous year. Should Anthony Volpe make progress, he’ll undoubtedly contribute to the team’s overall achievements.
