Aaron Judge ignites Bronx mayhem with home run, but Yankees fan drama steals spotlight.

The Yankees’ commanding 12-3 victory over San Diego on Tuesday night featured several noteworthy highlights: a remarkable 10-run eruption in the seventh inning, a final score that reflected complete dominance, and a towering Aaron Judge blast that pulled him even atop the MLB home run leaderboard. Yet long before the offensive floodgates opened, an entertaining mini-drama unfolded in the right-field seats that had nothing to do with baseball statistics, but everything to do with souvenir shenanigans.

Judge, continuing his pattern of electrifying Yankee Stadium with powerful drives, launched his 12th homer of the campaign deep toward the right field bleachers during the fourth inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. made a valiant effort at the wall but couldn’t secure the ball.

That’s when the unexpected entertainment began.

A Bronx mystery in the stands

As Judge circled the bases amid roaring applause, a spectator sporting a green jersey made what appeared to be a perfect catch. He cleanly gloved the ball and burst into jubilant celebration with his companions, cheering, leaping, and savoring the moment of having captured a piece of Yankees lore.

The celebration proved momentary, however.

In a sequence worthy of a heist film, the ball worked loose from the fan’s glove and rolled precariously along the outfield wall’s edge. Enter an opportunistic fan in gray. With remarkable stealth, he reached over, retrieved the ball from the wall, and casually slipped it into his pocket – seemingly unaware (or perhaps perfectly aware) that YES Network cameras captured the entire maneuver.

While the original group remained oblivious to the switch, play-by-play announcer Michael Kay spotted the moment live.

“Watch the guy in the gray jersey: ‘I’m going to take this and put it right in my pocket … nobody saw it,'” Kay remarked with amusement. “Only the YES cameraman saw it,” added analyst Paul O’Neill, himself a Yankees legend.

The impromptu drama briefly overshadowed the game itself.

Souvenir justice prevails

Eventually, baseball karma restored balance. A nearby spectator who ended up with the ball returned it to the group that initially caught it. The incident concluded with smiles all around, a commemorative selfie with the prized keepsake, and a sense of fairness restored in the Bronx.

The moment, complete with viral video evidence, immediately became a talking point among Yankees enthusiasts and baseball commentators, highlighting both the unpredictability of live sporting events and the passionate (sometimes mischievous) nature of New York crowds.

Judge continues offensive dominance

Aaron Judge, New York Yankees captain, watched his home run fly to right field during the fourth inning on May 7, 2025, at Yankee Stadium, wearing jersey No. 99 and black batting gloves, as fans looked on in the background.

While the fan episode added levity to the evening, Aaron Judge once again demonstrated why he remains baseball’s most feared slugger. His solo shot to the right came against former Yankee Michael King and extended his impressive on-base streak to 32 consecutive games.

Now batting .414 with 12 homers and 33 RBIs through early May, Judge continues to lead the league across multiple offensive categories. His astronomical 1.263 OPS ranks among baseball’s elite, and his leadership remains central to New York’s early-season success.

The home run not only provided the Yankees an early advantage but set the stage for what would become one of their most memorable innings in recent memory.

Seventh-inning explosion

Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells celebrate after the Yankees catcher hit a grand slam to guide his team to 12-3 win over the Padres in New York, May 6, 2025.

After falling behind 3-2 in the seventh’s top half, the Yankees responded with 10 runs, powered by key contributions from Austin Wells, Ben Rice, Anthony Volpe, and Jasson Domínguez, who ignited the rally with a hustling leadoff double. Wells provided the exclamation point with a two-out grand slam – his first in the majors – becoming the first Yankee since Alex Rodriguez in 2009 to drive in five runs during a single inning.

This offensive outburst represented New York’s most prolific single-inning performance in a decade, transforming what appeared to be a potential fourth consecutive defeat into an emphatic victory celebration.

Stadium energy and series finale

With the triumph, the Yankees improved to 20-16, maintaining their position atop the AL East. The Yankee Stadium crowd – energized by the evening’s perfect blend of drama, dominance, and unexpected comedy – received full entertainment value.

Wednesday’s decisive series finale promises another compelling matchup, with Max Fried (6-0, 1.01 ERA) opposing Dylan Cease (4-1, 2.45 ERA) in what shapes up as a playoff-caliber pitching duel.

And while fans will undoubtedly focus primarily on the diamond, Tuesday night served as a reminder that sometimes the most unforgettable moments occur just beyond the playing field.
