Yankees captain Aaron Judge remained off the field and was only a spectator at the World Series in Phoenix on Monday. However, he expressed his optimism about playing on the field in the upcoming season. The superstar slugger looks upbeat about Hal Steinbrenner incorporating major changes this offseason to deliver him the result promised while agreeing to a mega deal last December.

“We haven’t made it to the big dance in quite a few years, so we got some work to do, even on the player side,” Aaron Judge said. “So looking forward to hopefully getting us back to the promised land with some good moves.”

Aaron Judge was at Chase Field on Monday to receive the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, baseball’s highest accolade for humanitarianism and sportsmanship. He won it for work done through his All Rise Foundation.

Aaron Judge optimistic about Yankees changes

The 6-foot-7 slugger was honored nonetheless with the award but his eyes were clearly on the World Series trophy. However, Aaron Judge’s greatest challenge is guiding the Yankees back to the Fall Classic for the first time since 2009. The team captain has already discussed offseason changes with owner Hal Steinbrenner.

The 31-year-old baseball superstar admitted that he had already spoken with Steinbrenner about the Yankees Sunday and would meet again in person after returning to New York. An ongoing dialogue has apparently persisted since the season’s end, as Aaron Judge promised. He hinted that some organizational shakeups may be brewing.

“I think they’re working on that,” Aaron Judge before the Game 3. “You know, changes could mean a lot of different things. From philosophies, players, coaches, everything.”

Aaron Judge mentioned before that the team was actively working on plans for the future. He acknowledged that it was a challenging period, especially with the World Series taking place. Aaron Judge believed that once the World Series concluded and the offseason began, more significant developments would become apparent.

The Yankees captain emphasized that there was still plenty of time, but the team had been diligently working on their plans. They had organized numerous meetings in Tampa shortly after the season ended, indicating their strong commitment to making progress. Aaron Judge expressed his anticipation of receiving updates on the ongoing developments.

However, Aaron Judge declined to provide specifics on his talks with Steinbrenner or reveal any general themes, preferring to keep details internal. However, on the final day of the season, he singled out the analytics department as an area of concern, so expect changes there in the Yankees’ offseason renovations.

Will the Yankees deliver the promised land to Aaron Judge?

Though Brian Cashman is yet to address the media since the 82-win campaign ended publicly, the expectation is that both he and manager Aaron Boone will return in 2024. The general manager inked a reported 5-year, $25-million-plus contract last winter, so his job was never truly jeopardized given his longtime rapport with Steinbrenner. Boone is entering his final season, but Cashman has repeatedly deflected blame from the manager, with Aaron Judge also a vocal supporter.

Steinbrenner has made clear he values Aaron Judge’s input. The owner personally sealed the slugger’s record 9-year, $360 million deal last December, appointing him the first Yankees captain since Derek Jeter‘s 2014 retirement. Based on their discussions, Aaron Judge believes meaningful organizational changes are coming.

Aaron Judge mentioned that the term “changes” could encompass various aspects, including philosophies, players, and coaches. He acknowledged that the team hadn’t reached the pinnacle of the sport for several years and emphasized that there was significant work to be done, particularly in terms of player acquisitions. The Yankees captain conveyed his optimism about the possibility of guiding the team back to a championship with well-executed moves.

Earlier this month, Steinbrenner mentioned that the Yankees’ organizational meetings in Tampa had some intense moments, suggesting that these discussions might lead to positive developments. He also noted that Judge’s input was valuable in addressing the problems that led to the Yankees missing the playoffs for just the fifth time in Cashman’s 25-year tenure as GM.

Steinbrenner conveyed the value of having a captain with whom he can communicate effectively, someone he regards as a genuine team leader who commands respect from both younger and seasoned players. He highlighted the importance of gaining insights and perspectives from various members of the team and expressed his satisfaction with having such a leader. Thw owner also mentioned Gerrit Cole in a similar light, implying that Cole also holds a crucial role in the team dynamic.

New goal of Aaron Judge

Meanwhile, respect for Aaron Judge reached new heights, extending well beyond the baseball field, as evidenced by the presentation of the Clemente Award on Monday. He became the fourth Yankee to receive this honor, joining the ranks of Ron Guidry (1984), Don Baylor (1985), and Derek Jeter (2009). In addition to Clemente’s remarkable humanitarian contributions, the slugger expressed his deep admiration for him as a fellow right fielder.

Aaron Judge expressed his admiration for the achievements of Clemente, acknowledging the impressive milestones such as 3,000 hits, strong batting averages, and significant home run numbers. However, he conveyed a sense of jealousy, particularly regarding the player’s Gold Gloves.

The Yankees leader praised the player’s defensive prowess, citing memorable highlights of their throws and emphasizing how they set the standard for being an All-Star outfielder. He admired the player as a model of a complete player, both offensively and defensively. Aaron Judge also alluded to the possibility of pursuing a similar path in his career, striving to become a well-rounded player. He mentioned that while he might not match the record for Gold Gloves held by the player, the player would remain an inspirational figure for him if he were to achieve such a milestone.

However, his immediate focus remains firm on the Yankees. He noted the team’s inability to reach the major postseason event in several years, emphasizing that there is work to be done, particularly regarding the players. Judge expressed his anticipation and hope for the team to return to the pinnacle of success.
