La expectación por ver a Aaron Judge batear su jonrón número 61, todo un récord, era máxima en el Yankee Stadium el jueves. Cuando el bateador levantó un lanzamiento del lanzador de los Medias Rojas Matt Barnes hacia el jardín central, todos, desde los aficionados hasta sus compañeros de equipo y los locutores, empezaron a celebrarlo. Pensaron que iba a cruzar la distancia de 408 pies sobre el muro. Desgraciadamente, se quedó corto por un metro y medio y fue a parar a los guantes de Kike Hernández.

La emoción de una persecución de jonrones en el béisbol no tiene parangón en ningún otro deporte, y las hazañas de Judge contra Boston dieron sobradas muestras de ello.

Aaron Judge no tuvo muchas oportunidades de hacer historia. Llegó al partido contra los Red Sox con 60 jonrones y necesitaba uno más para empatar a Roger Maris en el récord histórico de la Liga Americana. Alex Cora, mánager de los Red Sox, prometió que sus lanzadores “atacarían” al bateador neoyorquino como siempre hacían, pero el aspirante al MVP de la Liga Americana y a la Triple Corona fue retirado en tres de sus cuatro primeros turnos.

La mejor oportunidad de Judge llegó en la novena entrada, cuando el marcador era de 4-4 y estaba lanzando el relevista de los Red Sox Matt Barnes. Todo estaba preparado no sólo para un home run que empataba un récord, sino también para un walk-off home run que ganaba el partido.

En el quinto lanzamiento, con la cuenta en 2-2, Judge golpeó una bola rápida alta y desató un rugido en todo el Yankee Stadium. La retransmisión de la Fox, dirigida por el comentarista Kenny Albert, pensó que había marcado un jonrón: “¡Aaron Judge! ¡Centro del campo! ¡Muy atrás! ” mientras la cámara mostraba un tiro que era claramente un home run.

Albert terminó su llamada diciendo: “Pero Hernández está ahí”. La pelota cayó a pocos metros del muro del jardín central y en el guante de Kiké Hernández.

La exhibición del MLB Statcast dio al público una emocionante razón para estar electrizado. Después de que Aaron Judge golpeara la pelota, ésta viajó a una velocidad de 113,0 millas por hora y alcanzó los 404 pies. Fue el golpe más duro y largo del partido, en el que hubo dos home runs reales.

Desafortunadamente, Aaron Judge bateó la bola en lo más profundo del estadio, así que la historia tendrá que esperar al menos un día más, y el viernes lo pasaremos enteramente dentro de los confines de Apple TV+.

La buena noticia para los Yankees es que siguen ganando a sus rivales. Evitaron que los Red Sox anotaran en la parte alta de la 10ª entrada, y el sencillo de Josh Donaldson en la parte baja de la 10ª les dio la victoria.
