Yankees captain Judge: Fan emotions over “good friend” Soto understandably personal

The Subway Series ignites this weekend with storylines that transcend mere standings or statistics. At its core lies a narrative about commitment, decision-making, and perhaps the most contentious free-agent departure in recent memory. As Juan Soto prepares to step back onto Yankee Stadium soil wearing Mets colors, Aaron Judge – the cornerstone of the New York Yankees – isn’t shielding his former teammate from the inevitable storm brewing in the bleachers.

The Yankees captain believes Juan Soto is entitled to make his own decision and so are the Yankees fans to have their won feeling about him.

Soto, who landed a staggering 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets last December, faces his former supporters Friday evening for the first time since departing the Bronx. His electrifying but abbreviated Yankees tenure culminated in disappointment for countless pinstripe devotees who envisioned him partnering with Judge for the foreseeable future.

Instead, he crossed metropolitan boundaries for marginally better terms, igniting a firestorm that continues to smolder.

Judge understands Yankees fans’ anger

All eyes on Yankees fans as Mets' Juan Soto is slated to return to Yankee Stadium for Subway Series on May 16, 2025.

The Yankees’ captain balances multiple roles – clubhouse anchor, generational talent, and measured diplomat during turbulent moments. Regarding Soto’s return, however, he’s not standing between fans and their sentiments.

“It’s definitely personal for the fans, and they can have their opinion,” Judge told NJ.com. “Soto is a good friend of mine. We built a great relationship when he was here, so I’m always wishing him nothing but the best.”

Despite forging a strong connection during their 2024 campaign that propelled the Yankees to their first Fall Classic appearance since 2009, Judge comprehends the emotional fallout.

“He made the decision he thought was best for him and his family,” Judge added. “Nobody can really say anything about that besides him.”

Nevertheless, he anticipates a vocal fan reaction.

The reception awaiting Soto leaves little to speculation. Supporters haven’t forgotten his transition from Bronx hero to Queens centerpiece, selecting virtually identical financial terms across town rather than remaining with an organization and fanbase that embraced him immediately.

WFAN personality and passionate Yankees advocate Keith McPherson articulated the prevailing mood: “You went across town thinking that we were going to let you live. Hell, no.”

Soto’s public statements – notably describing New York as a “Mets town” and claiming consideration of “all 30 teams” – only intensified resentment.

“You’re not available to all 30 teams, Juan. Don’t lie to us,” McPherson declared during his Wednesday broadcast. “There was only one place that you were going to go if it wasn’t the Yankees.”

Soto himself acknowledges the impending reception.

“It’s going to be 50,000 against one,” he told the New York Post. “They’re going to try to get on me. It’s part of it.”

Judge keeps focus on the field

While Soto posts respectable numbers through 43 Mets appearances – batting .255 with eight homers and an .845 OPS – Judge continues dominating performances and headlines alike. The reigning AL MVP maintains an MVP-caliber trajectory, hitting an extraordinary .412 with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs. His league-leading 1.279 OPS underscores his offensive supremacy.

With Judge performing at peak capacity and the Yankees (25-18) commanding a 3.5-game division lead, confidence permeates the Bronx despite Soto’s departure.

Judge perceives no significant setback from Soto’s absence, at least regarding the current roster. He highlights the organization’s offseason acquisitions, including Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger, and Trent Grisham, as crucial components creating a deeper, more balanced offensive attack.

“We had the opportunity to bring in Goldie, we brought in Bellinger,” Judge told YES Network. “To see what Trent has been able to do playing every day has been huge… So it works.”

Behind the scenes: Judge dismisses enemity with Soto

Some critics suggested Judge inadequately recruited Soto during free agency, but the captain dismisses such speculation.

“Ultimately, I’ve been in his shoes,” Judge said. “I know what type of pressure that is… and the unknown that you’re thrown into.”

Far from distant, Soto created meaningful connections throughout the Yankees organization. Judge specifically noted his influence on teammates like Oswaldo Cabrera and recalled their frequent batting discussions.

“He was a big part of this clubhouse,” Judge said. “Everybody in here enjoyed him, loved him. He was a brother in the short amount of time he was here.”

Bronx connection, cultural resonance

Soto’s significance extended beyond statistical contributions. For the Bronx’s substantial Dominican community – representing approximately a quarter of the borough’s population – Soto embodied cultural importance. His charisma, humility, and competitive spirit resonated profoundly with a fanbase eager for renewed greatness.

This connection magnified the disappointment surrounding his Yankees exit.

Nevertheless, Judge believes the organization, supporters, and roster have progressed forward, without necessarily forgetting.

“As much as we miss not having him here,” the Yankees captain said, “we’re all excited for the deal he signed for him and his family.”

A weekend of emotions in Subway Series

Both New York teams enter the weekend sporting comparable records and October aspirations. However, emotional undercurrents may overshadow standings implications. Each Soto plate appearance in the Bronx carries the weight of what was and what might have materialized.

The thunderous disapproval by Yankees fans appears inevitable. And Judge won’t intercede.
