A Yankees fan’s night turned dangerous Friday when concrete debris fell from Dodger Stadium’s upper deck and struck him during New York’s 8-5 loss to Los Angeles.
Ricardo Aquino, visiting from Mexico City, was hit in the back by a concrete chunk while sitting in Section 10 along the first baseline. The incident happened during the third inning of what was supposed to be a celebratory World Series rematch.
Aquino displayed a substantial piece of the fallen debris in photos obtained by The Athletic. The concrete fragment raised immediate safety concerns among nearby spectators at the historic ballpark.

“He’s in some pain, but all it was, was the hit. He’s not bleeding, but he’s in some pain,” said Alvaro Baeza, Aquino’s friend who served as translator following the incident.
Stadium security and police officers responded immediately to assist Aquino. They provided medical attention and an ice pack before allowing him to return to his seat. No serious injuries or bleeding occurred, but witnesses documented the alarming episode.
This is the same stadium that renovated toilets for $100 million to fulfill Roki Sasaki’s wish for Japanese-style washrooms.
Spectators express safety concerns
Fellow fans described the frightening moment and questioned stadium safety protocols. Several witnesses confirmed seeing the concrete fall from above.
“Me personally, to see some rocks fall like that — I would be clearing out this whole area,” said Lewis Loy of Wilmington, California to the Athletic. “How do you know it’s not going to fall anymore? … It could have hit a kid.”
Jessica Coria sat directly in front of Aquino when the incident occurred. She initially believed someone had thrown the object before realizing its true origin.

“Then [Aquino] showed us the rock, and it was clearly from the stadium that fell on him,” Coria explained.
The Dodgers issued a cautious statement acknowledging the situation while promising a thorough investigation.
“We are aware of the report,” the team said. “We cannot say anything more until we have all of the information, which we are currently gathering.”
Historic Dodger Stadium faces infrastructure questions

The concrete incident highlights ongoing concerns about Dodger Stadium’s aging structure. The venue opened in 1962, making it baseball’s third-oldest active ballpark behind only Fenway Park and Wrigley Field.
While Dodger Stadium remains an iconic venue with spectacular Chavez Ravine views, its age has generated maintenance and safety discussions in recent years. Friday’s episode could prompt MLB officials to reassess safety protocols, particularly in upper-deck areas.
No additional debris fell during the remainder of the game. However, witnesses suggested more immediate precautionary measures should have been implemented.
Stadium officials and Major League Baseball now face pressure to address the concrete incident as the series heads to Game 3. Fans and players deserve assurance that such dangerous episodes won’t recur.
The investigation into Friday’s incident will determine whether structural issues exist at the historic ballpark. Meanwhile, the Yankees face the challenge of recovering from consecutive devastating losses while addressing safety protocols that may require updates to prevent similar incidents.
Dodger Stadium’s reputation as one of baseball’s premier venues hangs in the balance. The concrete episode raises questions about maintenance standards at aging ballparks.
