Yankees make bold bet on little-known Dominican teenage prospect

NEW YORK — The Yankees are trying to win a division race with a roster that has spent much of the summer changing by the week. At the same time, some of the organization’s most consequential decisions are being made years away from Yankee Stadium, before a teenager has played a professional inning.

That is the uncomfortable arithmetic of the international market. Teams commit real bonus-pool money to players whose bodies, positions and skill sets can change dramatically before they reach full-season baseball. The Yankees know both sides of that equation.

Jasson Dominguez remains the obvious reminder. New York committed $5.1 million to the Dominican outfielder in 2019 amid enormous expectations. Seven years later, Dominguez has reached the majors but has not yet become the finished star many imagined. The Yankees optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Aug. 4 after he hit .230 with six home runs and 14 RBIs in 53 major league games this season.

The organization has not backed away from the Dominican market because one development path became complicated. Shortstop Mani Cedeno received a $2.5 million bonus in January 2025, the largest Yankees international bonus of the past several classes. New York then entered the 2026 signing period with a $5.44 million pool, tied for the smallest in MLB after losing $1 million from its allotment for signing Max Fried.

International scouting also forces clubs to work on a calendar that barely resembles the major league one. Evaluations begin years before a player can appear in an affiliated game, and reported understandings can form long before a contract is eligible to become official. That leaves organizations betting not only on present tools, but on how a teenager will grow, adjust to better competition and handle a development path that can stretch across half a decade.

That makes the Yankees’ newest reported commitment stand out. Dominican journalist Wilber Sanchez reported Wednesday that New York has reached a verbal pre-agreement with 15-year-old outfielder Wilson Gomez of Monte Plata for a $1 million signing bonus. Sánchez identified Gomez as part of the 2028 international class, making this a long-range bet rather than an addition to the farm system today.

Yankees are paying for tools before there is a pro track record

The scouting snapshot explains the early interest. Gomez is an outfielder with speed, power and a record of offensive success against the competition he has faced in the Dominican Republic.

Sánchez’s description put the athleticism first.

“runs a 6.5-second 60-yard dash, has power, and has hit at every level.”

For a 15-year-old outfielder, that mix gives the Yankees several developmental paths. The speed creates a chance to stay in center field, while added strength could bring more power. The challenge is projecting which traits will still separate him after years of physical growth and stronger competition.

The reported agreement is not an official MLB signing. Gomez cannot sign a professional contract now. The source material identifies him with the 2028 class, even though one portion of the initial reporting described a 2027 timetable.

There is another reason not to lock in a future signing date. The current Major League collective bargaining agreement expires Dec. 1, 2026, and MLB has proposed changes to international entry rules, including raising the signing age. The system governing the 2028 class could therefore change.

A $1 million promise larger than the raw number suggests

A PinstripesNation comparison of recent Yankees international pools shows the scale of the reported commitment.

The $1 million attached to Gomez would equal 18.4% of New York’s entire 2026 pool of $5.44 million. Against the Yankees’ $6.26 million pool from 2025, it would represent 16.0%. It is also 40% of the $2.5 million bonus Cedeno received in January 2025.

The Yankees’ eventual 2028 pool is not known, so those percentages are not a forecast. They simply show that $1 million sits in premium territory by the club’s recent international spending standards.

The wider odds underline the risk. In a June fact sheet supporting proposed changes to international player development, MLB said only 6% of international signees reach the majors, 44% are released within three years and 83% of signing bonuses have gone to players who never reached MLB.

Those league-wide numbers do not predict Gomez’s future. They show how much projection is built into every seven-figure bet on a teenager.

However, claims of skimmed bonus money led the Yankees to dismiss international scouting director Donny Rowland in November 2025.

Dominguez comparison arrives before Gomez can even sign

The reaction around the Yankees shows how much the Dominguez experience now shapes expectations for another highly paid Dominican teenager.

One response in the supplied fan discussion dismissed the investment before Gomez has entered professional baseball.

“Don’t waste your $ he’s another bust like the Martian.”

Another reaction focused on how long it takes to know whether the hype is justified.

“This was jasson dominguez lol. Too many got over hyped about this We gotta wait at least 7 years lol.”

The comparison has limits. Gomez and Dominguez share a country, an outfield position and a tool-heavy description, but Dominguez received more than five times the reported Gomez bonus and carried extraordinary industry-wide hype.

Gomez is much earlier in the process. The Yankees are making a financial statement about his tools, not projecting an arrival date in the Bronx.

Why the Yankees are willing to move this early

International scouting runs on a longer clock than the major league roster. By the time a signing period opens, many coveted players have already been evaluated for years and are strongly connected to clubs.

The reported pre-agreement gives the Yankees a chance to reserve a meaningful future investment for a player they believe has impact athleticism. It also comes while the organization is reshaping its international operation after the departure of longtime scouting director Donny Rowland before the 2026 class.

For now, Gomez remains a 15-year-old amateur with a reported agreement, a 6.5-second 60-yard dash and years of development between him and the Bronx. The $1 million figure is what makes the story significant. It says the Yankees are willing to make one of their biggest recent international bets before the rest of Gomez’s baseball story has begun.
