As the 2025 MLB season approaches, the New York Yankees are exploring avenues to bolster their infield depth. A notable proposal has emerged, suggesting the acquisition of former first overall draft pick Royce Lewis from the Minnesota Twins. This prospective trade suggested by MLB insider Jim Bowden would involve the Yankees sending infielder Oswald Peraza, along with left-handed pitcher Henry LaLane and right-handed pitcher Cam Schlittler, to Minnesota in exchange for Lewis.
Royce Lewis: A profile of potential and challenges
Royce Lewis, 25, was selected first overall by the Twins in the 2017 MLB Draft. His journey has been marked by both promise and adversity. Since his MLB debut in 2022, Lewis has displayed considerable offensive talent, posting a 126 OPS+ and hitting 33 home runs over 152 games. However, his career has been hampered by injuries, including multiple knee surgeries and, most recently, a hamstring issue that will sideline him for the start of the 2025 season.
Yankees’ infield dynamics and the need for reinforcement
The Yankees’ infield configuration has seen significant shifts. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. transitioning to second base and DJ LeMahieu recovering from injury, the third base position remains uncertain. Oswaldo Cabrera is currently projected as the starting third baseman, though he is often viewed as more suited to a utility role.
Oswald Peraza, once a top prospect for the Yankees, has faced challenges securing a consistent role. His offensive struggles in 2023, where he posted a .191/.267/.272 slash line over 191 plate appearances, coupled with a shoulder injury that limited his 2024 season, have raised questions about his future with the team.

Proposed trade package: Evaluating the assets
The suggested trade involves the Yankees parting with Peraza and two pitching prospects:
Henry LaLane (LHP): A young left-handed pitcher with promising potential, though he has yet to make his major league debut.
Cam Schlittler (RHP): A right-handed pitcher known for his command and developing repertoire, also awaiting his MLB debut.
For the Twins, acquiring Peraza could provide infield depth and a change of scenery that might rejuvenate his career. The addition of LaLane and Schlittler would bolster their pitching prospects, aligning with a longer-term development strategy.

Assessing the risks and rewards
For the Yankees, trading for Lewis presents a calculated risk. His injury history is a concern, but his offensive upside is undeniable. If Lewis can maintain health, he could address the Yankees’ need for a dynamic presence at third base.
As noted by MLB insider Jim Bowden, “The Twins trade the oft-injured Royce Lewis to the Yankees for lefty Henry LaLane, righty Cam Schlittler and infielder Oswald Peraza.”
Conversely, the Twins would be wagering on Peraza rediscovering his form and the potential of two unproven pitchers. This move could be seen as a step toward reshaping their roster with an eye on future competitiveness.
Strategic considerations moving forward
While the proposed trade remains speculative, it underscores the Yankees‘ intent to reinforce their infield and make strategic moves aimed at immediate success. Balancing the potential rewards with the inherent risks of acquiring a player like Lewis will require careful deliberation. As the season unfolds, the Yankees’ front office will need to assess whether this move aligns with their broader objectives and enhances their pursuit of championship aspirations.

Sorry, the Yankees have 2025 pitching plans for Schlittler in the Bronx. Plus as talented as Lewis is, he simply can’t stay healthy, and I don’t trust the Yankees Medical Group to be able to change Lewis into a healthy player.
