Jasson Dominguez will start in left field for the Yankees tonight as the team gears up for a crucial playoff push. Yankees manager Aaron Boone, in his weekly interview with “Talkin’ Yanks,” emphasized that Dominguez will have plenty of opportunities to contribute during the final stretch of the season.
Jasson Dominguez to play LF as Yankees make playoff push
“The roster’s always evolving, and Dominguez has been in the discussion for a while,” Boone said. “With September 1st behind us, it felt like the right time to bring him up. He’s here to play.”
Boone also mentioned that Jasson Dominguez’s presence allows the team to manage their star players’ workload, specifically giving Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton occasional days at designated hitter. Dominguez’s left-handed bat provides Boone with the flexibility to create favorable matchups, particularly against tough right-handed pitchers.
Aaron Judge will continue to man center field when he’s in the outfield, with Dominguez handling left. This dynamic will give the Yankees an outfield mix that can be tailored depending on the opponent.
Impact on Alex Verdugo’s Role
Jasson Dominguez’s arrival, however, has had an impact on Alex Verdugo’s playing time. Boone confirmed he had a conversation with Verdugo about his role moving forward but kept the details private. Verdugo has struggled this season after joining the Yankees, raising questions about his future with the team as Dominguez takes on a larger role.
“He and I spoke, and his role is a bit fluid right now,” Boone said. “Jasson being here certainly impacts him, but that’s as far as I’ll go with it.”
Despite the uncertainty, Alex Verdugo has taken the news in stride. When asked about Jasson Dominguez’s promotion, Verdugo expressed support for the young prospect.
“He’s going to come up here, he’s gonna play, and he’s gonna help this team win,” Verdugo told NJ Advance Media. “If I lose a little bit of playing time, I lose a little bit of playing time. At the end of the day, I want to win. The only thing that matters is getting to the playoffs and winning there.”
Alex Verdugo’s actions backed up his words during the Yankees’ 10-4 win over the Kansas City Royals, where he hit his first home run in 52 at-bats, giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning. Both Verdugo and Dominguez started that game, with Verdugo in left and Dominguez in center while Judge served as the designated hitter.
Moving forward, it’s likely that Boone will rotate Jasson Dominguez and Verdugo in left field based on matchups, but Verdugo’s team-first mentality has been evident. With the Yankees focused on securing a playoff spot, the team’s depth will be crucial.
