The New York Yankees have made a calculated move to enhance their pitching arsenal as spring training gets underway, securing the services of left-handed reliever Rob Zastryzny on a minor league contract. The organization has extended a spring training invitation to the veteran hurler, offering him an opportunity to showcase his abilities and potentially earn a spot on the team’s 2025 roster.

Building depth through experience

Zastryzny arrives in New York following an interesting turn of events that saw him designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs before ultimately choosing free agency after clearing waivers. Despite his relatively modest Major League experience, recent performances suggest he could be an intriguing addition to the Yankees’ pitching staff.

The southpaw’s 2024 campaign, though brief at the Major League level, demonstrated remarkable efficiency. In his 7.2-inning stint, Zastryzny posted impressive numbers: a microscopic 1.17 ERA accompanied by an outstanding 0.652 WHIP. His command proved particularly noteworthy, as evidenced by a sharp 5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. During this stretch, he demonstrated versatility by making three starts across nine appearances, primarily serving in an opener role before transitioning to the long reliever.

The majority of Zastryzny’s 2024 contributions came at the Triple-A level, where he established himself as a reliable bullpen presence. Across 30 appearances totaling 29.2 innings, he maintained a compelling 3.03 ERA. His control remained a strong suit, as he recorded 39 strikeouts while issuing only 11 walks, complemented by two saves that highlighted his ability to handle high-leverage situations.

Looking back at 2023, which marked his most extensive Major League experience, Zastryzny appeared in 21 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Though his 4.79 ERA and relatively even strikeout-to-walk ratio (15:13) suggested room for improvement, this experience ultimately shaped his evolution into a more refined pitcher, albeit in a depth capacity.

Zastryzny navigating a competitive landscape

The path to securing a spot in the Yankees’ bullpen presents a significant challenge for Zastryzny. The team has substantially reinforced their relief corps, headlined by the acquisition of elite closer Devin Williams and the retention of key contributors Ian Hamilton and Mark Leiter Jr. The addition of Fernando Cruz, obtained through a December trade with Cincinnati, further deepens an already formidable group.

Nevertheless, the Yankees’ current roster configuration presents a unique opportunity for a left-handed specialist to carve out a role. Zastryzny’s potential value is enhanced by his versatility, particularly his experience as an opener, combined with his recent improvements in both command and effectiveness.

Seizing the Yankees moment

While Zastryzny enters the Yankees‘ camp on a minor league deal, his track record at Triple-A and glimpses of Major League success suggest genuine potential for a meaningful contribution. His demonstrated ability to limit baserunners, coupled with his left-handed arsenal, positions him as an intriguing option for the Yankees’ bullpen configuration.

The upcoming spring training period will prove crucial in determining Zastryzny’s trajectory with the organization. Should he successfully translate his impressive 2024 form to the heightened competition of Major League camp, while demonstrating consistency and reliability, a return to the big leagues could be within reach.

As the Yankees continue their preparations for the 2025 season, Zastryzny’s development and performance will be closely monitored. His journey represents not just an individual opportunity for career advancement, but potentially a valuable piece in the Yankees’ pursuit of building a versatile and dependable bullpen for the challenges ahead.
