In a trade that initially flew under the radar, the New York Yankees acquired reliever Fernando Cruz and minor-league catcher Alex Jackson from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for former All-Star catcher Jose Trevino. While this move may not have garnered immediate headlines, there are compelling reasons to believe that Cruz could emerge as a pivotal asset for the Yankees.

Despite his unassuming career stats—a 4.52 ERA and a journeyman’s path through professional baseball—Cruz’s pitching arsenal and the Yankees’ track record of revitalizing arms under pitching coach Matt Blake hint at untapped potential that could redefine his role in the American League champions’ bullpen.

The splitter: Cruz’s secret weapon

Fernando Cruz’s splitter is no ordinary pitch; it’s one of the best in baseball. Statcast data reveals that his splitter generated a 59% whiff rate last season, ranking fourth among all pitchers in the league. When batters managed to make contact with the pitch, they fared no better, posting a paltry .116 batting average and a .149 slugging percentage. Remarkably, those numbers were even more dominant in 2023, when opponents hit just .094 against the splitter.

Modern pitching philosophies emphasize leveraging a pitcher’s best pitch to dominate opposing hitters. Cruz has embraced this approach, increasing his splitter usage to 42% in 2024. There’s every reason to believe the Yankees will encourage him to rely even more heavily on his splitter. Recent examples, such as reliever Tommy Kahnle’s 73% changeup usage rate with the Yankees in 2024, demonstrate the team’s willingness to prioritize elite offspeed pitches.

Addressing weaknesses: Command and home run rates

For all the brilliance of his splitter, Cruz’s overall effectiveness has been hindered by two glaring issues: poor command and susceptibility to home runs. He has walked over 11% of the batters he’s faced in his career, a rate that puts him among the league’s most erratic pitchers. Additionally, Cruz surrendered nine home runs in 66 innings last year, a troubling rate for a reliever.

The Yankees may already have a plan to address these shortcomings. One potential adjustment involves refining Cruz’s pitch mix. Over the past two seasons, Cruz has allowed 15 home runs, nine of which came off his cutter—a pitch that often drifts into the middle of the plate. By reducing his reliance on the cutter and focusing more on his splitter, Cruz could minimize his vulnerability to long balls and improve his overall effectiveness.

While these changes won’t solve Cruz’s command issues, they could position him to mitigate their impact. With a simplified arsenal and a clear emphasis on his best pitch, Cruz could become a more consistent and reliable presence in the Yankees’ bullpen.

Yankees’ confidence is not misplaced

The Yankees’ confidence in Cruz’s potential isn’t baseless. Under Matt Blake’s guidance, the Yankees have transformed several pitchers into high-impact contributors. Clay Holmes is a prime example: after arriving from Pittsburgh, Holmes turned into one of the league’s most dominant relievers, thanks in part to adjustments made by the Yankees’ coaching staff.

Cruz’s situation mirrors Holmes’s in many ways. Both pitchers had intriguing underlying metrics but struggled with consistency. By harnessing Cruz’s elite splitter and refining his approach, the Yankees hope to replicate the success they’ve had with other reclamation projects.

Former MLB player Cameron Maybin has voiced optimism about Cruz’s future with the Yankees. Maybin highlighted the team’s history of optimizing pitchers and praised Blake’s ability to simplify and maximize a player’s strengths. Cameron Maybin expressed confidence in the Yankees’ ability to help pitchers reach their potential, suggesting that if Cruz’s splitter is utilized effectively, he has the chance to become a significant asset for the team.

Team control and cost calculation

Another factor that makes Cruz an appealing acquisition is his contract situation. Cruz is not yet eligible for arbitration and won’t reach free agency until after the 2028 season. While it’s unlikely the Yankees will retain him for the entirety of his team control, his affordability and controllability add value to the trade. If the Yankees can maximize Cruz’s potential, they could benefit from multiple seasons of high-leverage relief without making a significant financial commitment.

Additionally, Cruz’s team-friendly contract makes him a valuable trade asset. Should the Yankees decide to move him in the future, his low cost and upside could attract interest from other teams, further enhancing the return on their initial investment.

Cruz deal Yankees’ strategic victory

Baseball is a game of adjustments, and the Yankees’ acquisition of Fernando Cruz represents a calculated gamble on their ability to unlock their potential. Cruz’s elite splitter provides a strong foundation, but his ultimate success will depend on the Yankees’ ability to address his weaknesses and refine his approach.

With a supportive coaching staff, a history of pitcher development, and a willingness to experiment with unconventional strategies, the Yankees have positioned themselves to turn Cruz into a valuable bullpen piece. If their gamble pays off, this under-the-radar trade could become a pivotal moment in their quest for sustained success in the American League.

As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Fernando Cruz to see if he can capitalize on this opportunity. The Yankees’ faith in his potential underscores their commitment to finding value in unexpected places. While Cruz’s career has been marked by inconsistency, his splitter offers a tantalizing glimpse of what could be a transformative future.

In the ever-unpredictable world of baseball, stories like Cruz’s remind us of the game’s endless possibilities. For the Yankees, this trade is not just about adding another arm to their bullpen—it’s about betting on a player’s ability to rise above his limitations and become a key contributor on the sport’s biggest stage. Only time will tell if Fernando Cruz can deliver on that promise, but the potential rewards make this a gamble worth taking.
