Yankees Reportedly Could Sign Cy Young Award Front-Runner Blake Snell In Much-Needed Off-Season Move

Recent reports suggest that the New York Yankees are in contention to acquire one of baseball’s premier pitchers during the upcoming off-season. As the 2024 season looms, the question of who will take the mound for the Yankees has arisen numerous times. Presently, the Yankees boast the formidable pitching duo of Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, along with some promising internal candidates to complete their rotation.

However, it seems almost certain that the Yankees will augment their roster through free agency or trades, and the name circulating as a potential addition is none other than the San Diego Padres’ standout, Blake Snell, as noted by The Athletic’s Jim Bowden.

Yankees may secure leading Cy Young award contender

Blake Snell is currently a front-runner for the National League Cy Young Award, following an exceptional season in which he compiled a 14-9 record with a remarkable 2.25 ERA and 234 strikeouts across 32 starts. His last six starts were particularly impressive, with him allowing no runs in five of them. Snell’s pitching performance ranked in the 100th percentile for both run value and breaking run value, while opposing batters struggled mightily, hitting just .079 against his curveball, .185 against his changeup, and .123 against his slider. Jim Bowden has identified the New York Yankees as one of the top contenders to secure Snell’s services, alongside other teams like the St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the San Diego Padres themselves. Bowden further speculated that Snell’s potential contract could be in the ballpark of five years and $122 million.

The New York Yankees will face stiff competition, with the Boston Red Sox looming as a potential rival in the pursuit of Snell. Nevertheless, the prospect of adding a second Cy Young Award winner to their rotation alongside Cole is undoubtedly enticing. Snell, if acquired at the projected contract value, could be an absolute steal for the Yankees. In light of their ambition to return to World Series contention, it is imperative for the team to make significant moves in the off-season. In 2023, the Yankees secured 82 victories and demonstrated room for growth. Bringing in a pitcher of Snell’s caliber would undoubtedly be a significant step in the right direction.

As the 2024 season approaches, the Yankees find themselves at a crossroads, eagerly exploring opportunities to enhance their roster. The addition of Blake Snell, the Cy Young Award front-runner, could potentially transform their pitching staff and solidify their status as legitimate World Series contenders.
