Despite months of speculation linking the New York Yankees to St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, Jack Curry of the YES Network has confirmed that the Yankees “are not in” on the eight-time All-Star. This revelation follows weeks of trade rumors suggesting Arenado could be a target for the Bronx Bombers.

Arenado’s 2024 Season: A mixed bag

Sep 25, 2024; Denver, Colorado, USA; St. Louis Cardinals third base Nolan Arenado (28) reacts in the third inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

Nolan Arenado remains a premier defensive talent in Major League Baseball, but his offensive performance in 2024 showed signs of decline. The 33-year-old posted a .266 batting average, a .321 on-base percentage, and a .294 slugging percentage, along with 16 home runs, 71 RBIs, and a 102 wRC+. While these numbers are serviceable, they represent a noticeable drop from his career norms.

Defensively, Arenado continues to excel, recording six defensive runs saved and nine outs above average this season. His ability to consistently deliver Gold Glove-caliber defense has solidified his reputation as one of the league’s best at the hot corner.

A tough fit for the Yankees

Arenado’s elite glove would undoubtedly enhance the Yankees’ infield, particularly at third base, a position where the team has struggled with consistency. His bat, while not as potent as in years past, could still offer reliable production to a lineup that faltered in the lower order last season.

However, Arenado’s hitting profile raises concerns. His pull-heavy tendencies may not translate well to Yankee Stadium, where dimensions favor left-handed power hitters. This potential mismatch limits his offensive value in pinstripes.

Beyond performance considerations, Arenado’s contract poses significant challenges for the Yankees. He is under contract for three more years with an annual luxury tax salary of $25.5 million, though that figure drops to $21.1 million when factoring in financial contributions from the Colorado Rockies. Adding such a contract would require careful maneuvering for a team already navigating the upper echelons of the luxury tax threshold.

Moreover, Arenado wields a full no-trade clause, which he recently exercised to block a potential trade to the Houston Astros. Even if the Yankees expressed interest, securing Arenado’s approval would add another layer of complexity to negotiations.

With Arenado seemingly off the table, the Yankees are expected to explore alternative solutions to bolster their infield. They could target a more versatile player who aligns better with their financial and strategic goals.

As the Yankees continue to evaluate their roster for the 2025 season, it’s evident that Nolan Arenado will not play a part in their plans. While his defensive prowess remains unmatched, the challenges surrounding his contract, fit, and trade approval have made this potential partnership unfeasible.
