CLEARWATER, Fla. — After beating the Phillies 8-3 on Saturday, there was another Yankees roster cut. This ended the spring training of one of their infielders and a catcher.
After talking to reporters at BayCare Park, manager Aaron Boone returned to his office. Bench coach Carlos Mendoza joined him, talked briefly to Boone, and then went to the clubhouse. The Yankees roster cut became clear in what transpired between the two.
Wilmer Difo, an infielder who is among the non-roster invitees to the spring training camp, was the first person to go into Boone’s office with Mendoza for a short meeting behind closed doors. In 20 spring training games, Difo hit .188 with one home run and three runs batted in. However, he was out in the latest Yankees roster cut.
The Dominican has played 492 games in the major leagues over the course of eight seasons. He has hit .250 with 19 home runs, 103 RBI, and an OPS of .664 while playing for the Nationals (2015–20), the Pirates (2021), and the Diamondbacks (2022).
The other one to get eliminated by the latest Yankees roster cut was catcher Rodolfo Duran. The 25-year-old has never played in the MLB. In 15 spring games, he hit .160 without any homer or RBI. Last year, he played in Double-A.
The Yankees roster cut has left the team with 43 players, including those on the injured list.
Before their season opener on Thursday against the San Francisco Giants at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees have to cut down to 26 players.
