Yankees starters Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes are swiftly taking steps to overcome the disappointments of the 2023 season. Both left-handed pitchers have already joined the Yankees’ spring training facility in Tampa before it officially starts, and the team’s general manager, Brian Cashman, is optimistic about their early performances.

Even with the addition of All-Star Marcus Stroman to strengthen their rotation, the Yankees still face uncertainties beyond Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole. Injuries disrupted the promising seasons of Rodon and Cortes last year, limiting their potential.

Rodon, Cortes resurgence key for Yankees in 2024

Nevertheless, Cashman remains open to potential roster additions before the start of spring training in a month. While recognizing the possibility of a formidable rotation if everything falls into place, he emphasizes a cautious approach, steering clear of relying on perfect scenarios. The Yankees are committed to exploring and adapting as needed, actively seeking opportunities aligned with their championship goals. However, Cashman expresses satisfaction with the current roster and rotation.

A resurgence from Rodon and Cortes would significantly boost the Yankees‘ pitching confidence. This marks Rodon’s first full offseason with the team after a challenging 2023 marred by forearm, back, and hamstring issues. The heightened collaboration during the offseason has left Cashman impressed, noting substantial progress in Rodon’s arm action. Despite acknowledging the difficulties of the previous season, Cashman believes Rodon has the talent to reach his peak performance in 2024.

The early arrival and evident dedication of Rodon and Cortes send a clear message of determination. If they can translate this newfound focus into on-field success, the Yankees’ rotation has the potential to become a formidable force.

Nestor Cortes is set on recapturing the success he enjoyed in 2022 following a challenging 2023 season marked by hamstring and rotator cuff issues. General Manager Brian Cashman expresses optimism that Cortes’ shoulder problems are now in the past.

“Reports on him have been outstanding,” Cashman stated. “He’s putting in the effort, choosing to arrive in Tampa early to train with our team. The feedback we’ve received so far has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Cashman’s confidence in Cortes is based on the pitcher’s established talent. “We know what Nestor is capable of when he’s healthy. He was an All-Star and a significant contributor before last year’s injuries. We’re eager to have that player back in the rotation.”

Meanwhile, Anthony Rizzo has been given a clean bill of health by doctors regarding the concussion issues that affected his 2023 season. However, Cashman acknowledges the complexities associated with head injuries, requiring a cautious approach as Rizzo returns.

“The brain is a complex situation,” Cashman explained. “We’ll have to wait and see how things progress once he starts increasing his activity.”

These early updates bring encouraging signs for the Yankees as they prepare for the 2024 season. Cortes’ potential comeback strengthens the pitching staff, and Rizzo’s return adds depth to the lineup. Nevertheless, the Yankees will cautiously approach Rizzo’s return, prioritizing his long-term well-being.
