Yankees prospect Spencer Jones turns heads with new approach at the plate.

Standing at an imposing 6-foot-7, New York Yankees outfield prospect Spencer Jones is making it increasingly difficult for the organization to keep him in Double-A. Currently sharing the minor league lead with eight home runs while showcasing significant adjustments at the plate, Jones presents the Yankees’ front office with an intriguing dilemma: When should they elevate him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre?

Through his initial 113 plate appearances this season, Jones has compiled an impressive .926 OPS alongside his nine homers and six stolen bases. Most encouragingly, he’s addressing the primary concern in his offensive profile—strikeouts. While his 34.8% strikeout rate remains elevated, it represents meaningful progress from the troubling 36.8% rate that contributed to 200 strikeouts during his 2024 campaign.

Equipped with a transformed stance and enhanced pitch recognition, Jones isn’t merely generating power—he’s executing his approach with newfound consistency.

Sticking to the blueprint

Somerset Patriots manager Raul Dominguez has noticed the difference in Jones’ approach this season.

“Last year, he had some ups and downs, getting a lot of strikeouts, but he worked so hard in spring training, and so far has worked really hard on being consistent and trying to put the barrel on the ball to hit pitches in the zone,” Dominguez noted.

“If he can stay like that, I think he’s going to make the next step… He’s staying with his plan.”

Selected by the Yankees in the first round (25th overall) of the 2022 draft out of Vanderbilt, Jones concluded his 2024 season with impressive counting stats—27 home runs, 100 RBIs, and 37 stolen bases across 162 games with Somerset. However, his persistent strikeout issues extended his Double-A tenure longer than anticipated.

This year’s early returns suggest a potential breakthrough—not just in statistical production, but in mechanical adjustments and mental approach.

Mechanical transformation

Jones entered spring training utilizing a closed, upright batting stance reminiscent of Yankees superstar Aaron Judge. By April, however, his setup had undergone substantial modification. The outfielder widened his base, incorporated a crouch, and opened his front foot. These deliberate adjustments have yielded more consistent contact in the strike zone and a noticeable reduction in chase rate.

“It’s a new year, a new season, and they tried to work so hard with him in spring training, trying to put that plan together with him,” Dominguez explained. “The plan is working right now for him… he’s just got to stay consistent.”

While Jones hasn’t spoken to the media since preseason availability, his performance speaks volumes. His home run frequency—one every 12.71 plate appearances—represents a dramatic improvement from his 2024 rate of one homer every 32 plate appearances.

He’s also reaching base more consistently, posting a .346 OBP. Despite a modest .232 batting average, his overall plate discipline shows considerable development.

Challenging the narrative

Despite Jones’ obvious physical tools and recent production, ESPN analyst David Schoenfield recently suggested the prospect’s trade value “has fallen”—without providing substantive analysis to support this claim. This assessment was quickly challenged by Yankees insiders and supporters, particularly given Jones’ power surge and defensive growth.

In fact, Jones reached his seventh home run this season in just his 18th game—a milestone he didn’t achieve until his 59th game last year, providing tangible evidence of his advancement.

While Jones theoretically remains one of the Yankees’ most valuable trade chips, the organization has shown no inclination to move him. The development staff appears acutely aware of the risks associated with prematurely abandoning a raw but ascending talent—especially one drawing legitimate comparisons to Judge in both physical stature and developmental trajectory.

All-around development

Jones’s appeal extends beyond exit velocity and impressive power displays. His defensive capabilities and baserunning acumen have drawn praise from evaluators. Early-season analysis highlights his range in center field and above-average instincts—suggesting potential as a corner outfielder at minimum, with center field remaining a possibility.

With Scranton’s outfield depth currently compromised by injuries and underperformance, Jones may be just weeks away from earning his promotion to Triple-A.

Proving season for Jones

After failing to secure placement on major Top 100 prospect rankings following his 2024 season, Jones entered 2025 with clear motivation. His early-season performance indicates he’s addressing previous criticisms effectively.

Now in his third season with Double-A experience, the improvements are evident. His home runs carry greater impact, his strikeout totals have decreased, and his confidence appears heightened.

Dominguez attributes much of this progress to Jones’ maturity.

“He’s more consistent in what he’s doing, more mature with what he’s doing in the cage to prepare better,” the manager observed. “It’s good when the players are getting that result, they’re going to trust in it and keep going.”

Future projection

While Anthony Volpe and Jasson Domínguez have already made their presence felt in the Bronx, Spencer Jones could be the next homegrown power threat poised to join them—perhaps not immediately, but potentially later this season.

For now, he continues refining his reconstructed swing in Somerset. Though still developing, the raw abilities that made him a first-round selection are steadily evolving into refined skills that could soon translate to Yankee Stadium.
