The New York Yankees are wasting no time pushing their top talent forward. Following a blistering start to the 2025 season, 19-year-old infielder George Lombard Jr. has been promoted from High-A Hudson Valley to Double-A Somerset after just 24 games, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Lombard, the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect since Jasson Dominguez graduated to the majors, has turned heads early in his second full professional season. The 2023 first-round pick — selected 26th overall — has slashed an impressive .329/.495/.488 with one home run, 10 extra-base hits, and 13 RBIs. Just as notable: he’s drawn 23 walks while striking out only 22 times.

This early-season performance has prompted the Yankees to take an aggressive approach with his development, accelerating his path through the minor league system.

Lombard Jr., son of former MLB outfielder and current Detroit Tigers bench coach George Lombard, has long been seen as a high-upside talent with both the pedigree and work ethic to rise quickly. But scouts are now seeing something more. KHMER55

“More confident, stands straighter,” one talent evaluator told The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty. “Looks like he has a plan when he steps up there. There’s a presence to him — you already know he was a high pick, but then he shows you why.”

Lombard’s promotion marks his first jump to the upper minors and a significant test of whether his elite on-base skills and approach will translate at the next level. Though there’s no expectation he’ll reach the big leagues in 2025 — he’s played only 147 professional games, all below Double-A — the speed of his ascent signals the organization’s belief in his long-term potential.

The Yankees haven’t shied away from promoting young talent in recent years, and Lombard could soon join a wave of homegrown infielders knocking on the door.

If he continues to perform, George Lombard Jr. may not just be a promising prospect — he could be the next cornerstone in the Bronx.
