Carlos Correa is the best shortstop left in the free-agent market and reports are rife that the Yankees are after him. Buster Olney, an ESPN MLB insider for a long time, went on 95.7 The Game’s “Willard & Dibs” on Friday to talk about the latest news concerning Carlos Correa and revealed that the Yankees were set to beat the Giants in negotiations again to snatch away the shortstop.

According to the MLB insider:

“The team I’m watching at the moment—the Yankees. Because I’m definitely picking up a lot of vibes there that yeah they signed Aaron Judge to that $360 million deal, but they’re working on something big. I wish I could tell you exactly what that was. But, Carlos Correa, let’s face it, among the available free agents, that would be the biggest way to go.”

The Yankees are for a star shortstop since last year. They got Isiah Kiner-Falefa but he failed to live up to the expectation. Their farm system has two big prospects for the position. Oswald Peraza is already on the lineup while and highly regarded Anthony Volpe is pushing for an MLB cap. But having two-time All-Star Carlos Correa would be a big step up for them right away. But the Yankees weren’t willing to match the star shortstop’s terms a year ago and he went to the Minnesota Twins for a short-term contract with a high salary.

Now that Carlos Correa is once again a free agent, the Yankees have a chance to make up for past mistakes. No matter how good players like Volpe and Peraza are, there’s no guarantee they’ll reach the level of the 28-year-old, who has “22 homers, 64 RBIs, and 70 runs that helped him get an average of .291” last season. The star shortstop hit 20-plus home runs for six consecutive years and this is great for a player who plays a key defensive position.

But if the Yankees were to get Carlos Correa, it would not only help the team at shortstop, but it would also change New York’s opinion of Correa and the 2017 Astros in a big way. The Yankees lost to the Astros in the 2017 ALCS. Later, a sign-stealing scandal from that time in Houston’s history came to light.

Carlos Correa later said “There’s no excuse for that. We were wrong for everything we did in 2017.”

Keeping Aaron Judge and signing another star in Carlos Correa in the winter are viewed as a sort of a record. But the Yankees are capable of every record in MLB. Even though it could be argued that they need to add a left fielder more and it’s never a bad idea to stock up on starting pitchers like Carlos Rodon.

No matter what the Yankees do with free agents, it doesn’t look like the signing of Judge will slow them down this winter. GM Brian Cashman told on Wednesday:

“We have a lot of aspects of the roster that we need to address. There are other aspects of the roster we’re trying to address and we’ll continue to do so. We’re on the clock. We’ll obviously give manager Aaron Boone the best players so he can have the best team and he can do with it what he wants when spring training starts.”

Aaron Judge and Trea Turner are no longer free agents, so Carlos Correa is the biggest name left. The shortstop, who played for the Twins last year, has a chance to get the big, long-term deal he didn’t get then.
