Following the New York Yankees’ thrilling 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 1 on Saturday afternoon, the club announced a series of roster moves aimed at bolstering their depth and addressing key injuries.
The most significant transaction saw the Yankees placing infielder Jon Berti on the injured list due to an abductor strain.
Jon Berti, who was acquired from the Miami Marlins during the offseason, sustained the injury while legging out a hit in Wednesday’s game against his former team.
“I don’t think it’s overly severe, but I don’t have a timeline for you,” manager Aaron Boone said, expressing cautious optimism about Berti’s recovery timeline.
Cabrera expected to shoulder the load at third base
Despite Berti’s absence, the Yankees have expressed confidence in Oswaldo Cabrera to step up and fill the void at third base. Cabrera, who homered in the Game 1 victory, is expected to be the everyday starter at the hot corner in Berti’s absence.
“Oswaldo is a guy we have a lot of confidence in,” Boone said, underscoring the team’s belief in the young utility player’s ability to contribute.
In a separate move, the Yankees designated left-hander Josh Maciejewski for assignment. Maciejewski had appeared in just one game this season, pitching a clean inning on April 8 against the Marlins.
To fill the vacancies left by Berti and Maciejewski, the Yankees have called up infielder Kevin Smith and right-handed pitcher Ron Marinaccio from their minor league system. The infusion of fresh talent is expected to bolster the team’s depth and provide additional options for Boone and his coaching staff.
The roster shakeup comes on the heels of a hard-fought victory over the Guardians, a game that showcased the Yankees‘ resilience and ability to overcome adversity. With Berti’s injury and the corresponding moves, the team will undoubtedly be tested further, but the organization’s depth and the confidence in players like Cabrera suggest they are well-equipped to navigate the challenges ahead.
