ANAHEIM, Calif., — Jameson Taillon is doing better than expected after x-rays rule out any fracture to his throwing arm. A 91-mph ball hit the pitcher’s forearm on Tuesday during a game against the LA Angels.
Taillon has been hurt before and when a ball hit him at Angel Stadium, he thought, “Here we go again.”
However, x-rays the next day were negative for fracture. It looks like Taillon and the injury-plagued Yankees may have gotten lucky.
The injury forced Taillon to leave the game early on Tuesday during the Yankees’ 7-4 rout of the Angels. His 33rd pitch was returned at 91.3 mph by Magneuris Sierra and the ball hit Taillon’s forearm above the wrist.
Replays showed that Taillon looked like he was in pain as he left the field.
Taillon underwent an X-ray of his forearm after the game. The report came negative and treatments eased his pain and swelling.
This improvement continued into Wednesday though he missed the last game of the series. Manager Aaron Boone is optimistic about Taillon’s forearm injury recovery.
He kind of felt like it feels better than he expected, Boone said, divulging that the swelling hasn’t completely gone away just yet. So we’ll see how the next couple of days go here and hopefully he’ll be in position to make his next start. But we’ll know more in the next day and a half.
During Thursday’s off day, Taillon will play catch in Tampa. Then the team will evaluate if the pitcher can start in the next game.
Taillon’s absence would have been devastating. New York’s 40-man roster includes 11 injured pitchers. Nestor Cortes (groin strain) and Luis Severino also started (lat strain).
Both hurlers are quickly recovering and this brings relief for the Yankees. Cortes practiced in the bullpen during the game on Wednesday, and Severino will join the Low-A Tampa Tarpons on Friday.
Taillon posted a 3.97 ERA in 26 starts in 2022. The Canadian-American pitcher was positive on Tuesday about his next start. He was glad to have avoided a fracture to his right forearm and prevented himself from getting on the injured list.
It’s nice to finally catch a break. Or, not a break, he said, with a smile.
Do you think Jameson Taillon will be ready to start the next game? What do you think about his tryst with injuries? Do you have a message for the Yankees or fans?
