In a recent report by the New York Post on Thursday, it was disclosed that the New York Yankees have extended their initial offer to top free-agent pitcher Blake Snell. Nevertheless, the lack of substantial progress in negotiations with Snell, as well as two other prime targets in the rotation – free agent Jordan Montgomery and trade option Dylan Cease – has prompted the Yankees to explore alternative options. Among the prospective pitchers gaining attention, former Met Marcus Stroman is emerging as a more viable choice.
What is going on?
The Yankees find themselves at an impasse in Snell’s contract discussions, with a significant gap between the player’s asking price and the team’s offer. Despite indications that 2023 AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole supports Snell’s addition to the roster, the financial disparity remains a hurdle to overcome.
The organization speculates that Snell, who reportedly desires to join the Yankees, might face competition from the Giants and Angels. However, these teams are perceived as less attractive from a competitive standpoint. Given Snell’s remarkable performance with an MLB-best 1.20 ERA in the latter part of the previous season, other contenders, such as the Phillies, are also expressing interest in securing his services.
Jordan Montgomery, another target for the Yankees, is being considered for a return to the team. Despite the Yankees expressing increased interest in him, the primary uncertainty revolves around Montgomery’s preference, with speculation suggesting he might favor staying in Texas. Several teams, including the Phillies, Red Sox, Giants, and Angels, are actively pursuing Montgomery.
Yankees shift focus to alternative pitching options
An unexpected pursuit for Marcus Stroman by the Yankees has raised eyebrows, especially considering his past derogatory tweets about GM Brian Cashman. However, given Stroman’s talent, consistency, and durability, the Yankees are compelled to consider him as a potential addition to their pitching staff. Other teams, such as the Giants, Angels, Red Sox, and Orioles, have also expressed interest in Stroman.
Dylan Cease, a trade option for the Yankees, has presented challenges in negotiations, with the White Sox seeking a significant prospect package led by outfield prospect Spencer Jones. Despite the Yankees showing reluctance in meeting these demands, talks appear to have slowed, leaving the possibility that the White Sox may postpone the trade until the deadline.
The Yankees have explored the possibility of acquiring Jesus Luzardo, with talks involving the Marlins. However, there seems to be limited traction in these discussions, with the Marlins considering Luzardo, Edward Cabrera, and other starters in potential trade scenarios.
Corbin Burnes and Shane Bieber are viewed as less likely trade targets, as the Brewers and Guardians have competitive prospects in their respective divisions. Both teams are expected to retain these pitchers at least until the trade deadline, given their chances in their respective divisions.
