The New York Yankees have activated Giancarlo Stanton and named him as the designated hitter on the lineup against the Blue Jays in Sunday’s series final. This came a day after manager Aaron Boone admitted that Stanton was not in the lineup due to his ongoing effort to build stamina after returning from injury without a rehab assignment.
Boone also provided an update on Ian Hamilton, who is recovering from a right lat strain sustained on June 16. Hamilton is set for a high-intensity bullpen session on August 6, a crucial step in his recovery. Following this session, Hamilton will need to face live batters and participate in Minor League games before rejoining the team. He had resumed his throwing program in early July after dealing with a milder version of the same injury earlier in the season.
Yankees injury update on Rizzo
Regarding Anthony Rizzo, who is recovering from a right forearm fracture, Boone noted some progress. Rizzo started light swinging and performed fielding work at Yankee Stadium on August 2. While acknowledging that Rizzo’s full recovery is still a ways off, Boone found it encouraging to see Rizzo swinging a bat, even if not at full intensity. Rizzo sustained the injury on June 16 in a collision with Red Sox pitcher Brennan Bernardino.
Rizzo has been seen participating in conditioning drills on the field since late July and began fielding drills on Friday, as reported by YES Network’s Meredith Marakovits. The initial recovery timeline for Rizzo’s injury was estimated at four to six weeks.
Yankees injury update on Berti, Schmidt, and Poteet
Jon Berti, recovering from a left calf strain, has advanced to running at approximately 80% capacity after experiencing a setback during the All-Star break. Manager Aaron Boone noted that Berti’s recovery is now on a positive trajectory. Berti received a second platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection on July 20. His injury dates back to May 24, and he was placed on the 60-day Injured List (IL) on June 12. Originally expected to recover in six to eight weeks, the setback has prolonged his rehabilitation. In his limited 17 games this season, Berti has posted a .273 batting average with one home run and six RBIs.
Clarke Schmidt, who is dealing with a right lat strain, is scheduled to face live batters in a batting practice session on August 6. This follows a successful 20-pitch bullpen session on July 20, marking his first mound work since his May 26 start in San Diego. Boone shared Schmidt’s positive feedback about the session. Schmidt expects to be fully prepared by season’s end. His injury was confirmed by a May 29 MRI, leading to his placement on the 15-day IL on May 30, which was later extended to the 60-day IL on June 18. He resumed throwing on June 24 after consulting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.
Cody Poteet, suffering from a right triceps strain, was moved to the 60-day IL on August 1. His recovery includes bullpen sessions, with a 20-25 pitch session scheduled for July 25, as reported by the New York Daily News. Poteet’s last appearance was on June 12 in Kansas City.
These updates indicate gradual but steady progress for the injured Yankees players, each at different stages of their recovery. The team is managing their rehabilitation carefully to ensure a safe and effective return to play, balancing thorough recovery with the desire to have these players back in action as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, good for Berti and Rizzo. What about Trevino? What’s the pathway to get Cabrera a game or 2 a week, SOMEWHERE?
