The Yankees and the Blue Jays faced a long rain delay before the start of their three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Friday night. After storms in the Bronx on Saturday, more bad weather was expected for Sunday.
With the first pitch scheduled for 1:35 PM, the Yankees and the Blue Jays faced the likelihood of not being able to complete the final game of the series before the bad weather arrived. Weather.com predicted storms in the Bronx until 7 PM, with strong winds and small hail also possible.
According to Weather.com, scattered storms began at 3 PM, with a 91% chance of strong storms extending to 4 PM. This probability increases to 98% at 5 PM. At 4:40 PM, the Yankees announced that the game, currently tied 3-3, is delayed.
In a lineup adjustment, left fielder Alex Verdugo is out because Blue Jays right-hander Yariel Rodriguez has better results against left-handed hitters. Verdugo is also “hurt,” according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who did not specify Verdugo’s exact physical issues.
With Verdugo out, Aaron Judge will play left field and Trent Grisham will start in center. Gleyber Torres, who was benched on Friday for not running hard on a hit to the wall, is leading off.
