The New York Yankees’ pursuit of former National League MVP Cody Bellinger appears to be gaining momentum, with the Chicago Cubs signaling a willingness to negotiate a deal. Reports earlier indicated that the negotiations struck on cash considerations. However, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Cubs have softened their stance on financial terms, a development that could pave the way for the Yankees to acquire the star outfielder. The trade, if finalized, would address significant roster needs for the Yankees and signal a strategic shift for the Cubs.

Cubs’ concessions sweetens Yankees trade for Bellinger

In his live broadcast on Bleacher Report, Heyman stated that the Cubs would be willing to “eat” between $5 and $7 million of Bellinger’s contract. This opens the door wide for the Yankees to make a concrete offer. Bellinger is owed $25 million for the 2025 season, and the Cubs’ flexibility in absorbing a portion of that salary significantly lowers the financial barrier for a trade.

Jon Heyman reported on his B/R livestream that the Chicago Cubs are now willing to eat some of the Cody Bellinger contract.

This willingness by the Cubs to cover part of Bellinger’s contract suggests they are motivated to move the player, potentially aiming to gain prospects or younger talent to bolster their long-term roster strategy.

While the financial hurdle may be partially resolved, challenges remain in finalizing a deal. The Yankees will need to decide how much they are willing to part with in terms of prospects or players. Bellinger’s strong 2024 season has elevated his trade value, meaning the Cubs will likely demand a substantial return.

Another factor is the competition from other teams. While the Yankees appear to be the frontrunners, other organizations could enter the bidding war, potentially driving up the price. The Yankees must balance their desire to acquire Bellinger with their long-term goals of maintaining a strong farm system.

Adding Bellinger to the Yankees’ roster could significantly alter the team’s trajectory in 2025. Offensively, his power and ability to drive in runs would provide a much-needed boost. Defensively, his versatility addresses key areas of concern, making the Yankees a more balanced and complete team.

Additionally, Bellinger’s postseason experience and ability to perform in high-pressure moments could be invaluable for a Yankees squad aiming to make a deep playoff run. His presence would also relieve some of the pressure on Judge, allowing the Yankees’ captain to focus on his own game.

Bellinger valuable for the Yankees

For the Yankees, Bellinger represents a near-perfect solution to multiple offseason priorities. The team has been searching for a left-handed power bat to balance a lineup dominated by right-handed sluggers like Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. In 2024, Bellinger delivered a resurgent performance with the Cubs, slashing .271/.325/.426, hitting 18 home runs, and driving in 78 RBIs. His offensive resurgence comes after a few down years marred by injuries and inconsistency, proving he still has the ability to perform at an elite level.

Defensively, Bellinger brings versatility that the Yankees desperately need. A Gold Glove winner, he is capable of playing both center field and first base, providing the Yankees with flexibility in managing their lineup and addressing defensive gaps. His presence in center field could allow Judge to return to his natural position in right, further enhancing the team’s outfield dynamics.

The Cubs’ decision to trade Bellinger comes as part of a broader strategy to retool their roster. After signing Bellinger to a one-year deal with a mutual option, the Cubs enjoyed a standout season from the 29-year-old but now seem focused on maximizing his trade value. By agreeing to absorb a portion of his salary, the Cubs are making him more attractive to potential suitors, including the Yankees.

In return, Chicago is likely seeking top-tier prospects or young, MLB-ready players. This aligns with their rebuilding efforts and provides them with assets to remain competitive in the future.

The possibility of acquiring Bellinger has Yankees fans buzzing. Many see him as a player who can thrive under the bright lights of Yankee Stadium, with its short porch in right field perfectly suited to his left-handed power. Social media has been flooded with optimism, with fans envisioning a lineup featuring Judge, Stanton, and Bellinger as a formidable trio.

However, some fans remain cautious, noting Bellinger’s struggles in prior seasons. “It’s a gamble, but it feels like the right move,” one fan tweeted. “If the Cubs are eating some of the salary, it’s worth it.”

Rookie pitcher in Yankees’ return offer

The potential Cody Bellinger trade negotiations have entered a nuanced phase, with the Cubs’ approach showing surprising adaptability. Cubs President Jed Hoyer appears to be recalibrating the financial dynamics, potentially softening his previous hard stance on the contract structure.

The financial compromise could hinge on the Yankees’ willingness to consider right-handed pitcher Will Warren, currently ranked as the organization’s fifth-best prospect. Warren’s professional debut last season presented challenges, including a substantial 10.32 ERA and surrendering five home runs across 22.2 innings of work.

Talent evaluators view Warren as a potential back-end rotation arm, contingent on his ability to refine his command and enhance his physical strength. This could help him stabilize his velocity consistently in the mid-90s mile-per-hour range. Alternatively, his skill set might prove more valuable as a long-relief specialist.

The trade’s complexity suggests the potential inclusion of an additional low-risk prospect – what baseball insiders often term a “lottery ticket” player – could potentially finalize the transaction. Brian Cashman’s decision-making will ultimately be influenced by the Cubs’ willingness to absorb a significant portion of Bellinger’s contract.

As discussions progress, the Yankees and Cubs appear closer to finding common ground. With the Cubs demonstrating financial flexibility, the Yankees have a clear opportunity to make a move that could redefine their offseason. However, time will tell whether they can outmaneuver other potential suitors and finalize a deal that works for both sides.

The possibility of Cody Bellinger donning pinstripes is more realistic than ever, thanks to the Cubs’ willingness to cover part of his salary. For the Yankees, acquiring Bellinger would address both offensive and defensive needs, potentially making them a stronger contender in 2025. For the Cubs, trading Bellinger provides an opportunity to invest in their future.

As the offseason unfolds, the Yankees’ pursuit of Bellinger will remain one of the most compelling storylines. If the deal goes through, it could be the transformative move that propels the Yankees back to championship contention.
