The New York Yankees have received some promising updates on two of their top players – DJ LeMahieu and Gerrit Cole. According to MLB reporter Bryan Hoch, both players are making good progress with their respective injuries.
Gerrit Cole is expected to play catch again tomorrow, probably 25 throws. He will remain in New York during the upcoming road trip.

Even though the Yankees have already gotten off to an excellent start this season, LeMahieu and Cole are absolutely vital to the team’s championship aspirations. Their eventual returns could significantly boost the Yankees’ chances of making the playoffs – something they failed to do in 2023, but are currently projected to do this year with an 88% chance according to FanGraphs.
DJ LeMahieu
LeMahieu, who has been sidelined since late March with a bone bruise and small fracture in his right foot, is slated to travel with the team on their upcoming road trip to Cleveland and Toronto. This is a very positive sign, suggesting he’s nearing a return to game action after ramping up his baseball activities in recent days.

The veteran infielder is an essential part of the Yankees’ lineup, so getting him back healthy and productive will be crucial. His presence can help elevate the team’s offense and solidify their infield defense.

Tommy Kahnle set to throw a bullpen tomorrow or Friday in Tampa.
Gerrit Cole

As for the Yankees‘ ace, Gerrit Cole, he is scheduled to take an important step forward in his recovery this Thursday – he’ll play catch for the first time since being shut down with nerve inflammation in his elbow.
Cole, the reigning American League Cy Young award winner, was placed on the 60-day injured list and is not eligible to return until May 27 at the earliest. However, the fact that he’s progressing to throwing again is an encouraging sign.
Last Sunday, Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that Gerrit Cole was on track to begin his throwing program. Reports suggest Cole is targeting a return sometime in early June. This adds a current update on Cole’s potential return timeline.
The Yankees will understandably take a cautious approach with their prized right-hander, as his health is paramount to the team’s October aspirations. If Cole can return to form, he’ll provide a massive boost to a rotation that has performed well in his absence.
All in all, these positive updates on LeMahieu and Cole are extremely encouraging for the Yankees as they look to cement their status as one of the American League’s top contenders in 2024.
