The New York Yankees were heavily linked to San Diego star Juan Soto during the summer trade window. Now they have a bright chance of getting him, as the outfielder and the Padres are likely to face a problem over his salary hike.

With a talented roster that could be a postseason contender in 2024 if they enjoy better health, the Yankees still have their sights set on a World Series title. To achieve this, they’ll need to make substantial additions during the offseason. While the exact course of action remains uncertain, one intriguing possibility is a potential pursuit of San Diego Padres standout, Juan Soto, as suggested by Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

The suggestion is that the Yankees should seriously consider trading for Juan Soto if the San Diego Padres are open to offers during the offseason. The recommendation is to go all-in for this generational talent who is still in the prime of his career.

Why the Yankees have a real chance at Juan Soto

Juan Soto’s name has been circulating in the offseason rumor mill, raising speculation about the possibility of the young power hitter being traded. At just 24 years old, Soto is approaching free agency at the end of the 2024 season, setting the stage for a potentially record-breaking contract negotiation. Whether he secures an extension this offseason or chooses to explore free agency, a massive deal is virtually guaranteed.

The New York Yankees, known for their financial muscle, find themselves in a prime position to make a substantial move. With a pressing need for a left-handed batting presence and a desire to inject some star power into their lineup, the Yankees could see Soto as the perfect offseason addition to address these concerns.

As Juan Soto inches closer to free agency, a pivotal offseason lies ahead, and the San Diego Padres seem to be approaching their star outfielder with a flexible mindset.

General manager A.J. Preller, who recently reaffirmed his position for the upcoming season, addressed Juan Soto’s situation during his end-of-season media session. Preller indicated that the team’s primary approach would involve exploring the possibility of extending the contract of the 24-year-old power hitter.

Preller mentioned that they would engage in discussions during the offseason to assess the player’s intentions and explore the possibility of reaching a mutual agreement.

Should the Padres and Juan Soto fail to reach an agreement on a potential contract extension, it places the team in a rather delicate predicament.

As Juan Soto enters the final season of his arbitration, he is entitled to a salary increase from his 2023 earnings of $23 million. The Padres face the challenge of addressing multiple roster needs while potentially hesitating to let Soto depart without receiving more than just Draft compensation next offseason.

At the age of 24, Juan Soto is set to become a free agent after the 2024 season. Considering that the Padres have already committed to substantial long-term deals for other star players, such as Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Xander Bogaerts, combined with reports of a potential payroll reduction in the upcoming offseason, the prospect of a Soto extension may push the team beyond its financial comfort zone. Consequently, this could pave the way for an offseason trade that relocates Juan Soto to another destination.

Therefore, speculation has surfaced regarding the Padres’ willingness to entertain the notion of trading Juan Soto during the upcoming offseason. In a conversation held on Wednesday, Preller refrained from categorically dismissing this possibility.

The sidelines

The Padres’ inclination to secure Juan Soto’s services for an extended duration has been an ongoing theme. As far back as August, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that the Padres were actively pursuing an extension for Juan Soto, a pursuit that had persisted throughout the season. Nonetheless, these efforts have yet to advance to a definitive resolution, although the dynamics of negotiations can shift rapidly should either party perceive a heightened sense of urgency.

Juan Soto has maintained his status as one of the most prolific hitters in Major League Baseball since becoming a part of the Padres through a midseason trade in the 2022 season. During his tenure out west, he has consistently delivered impressive numbers, boasting a .265/.405/.488 batting line (with a 151 OPS+), along with 41 home runs and 125 RBI over 214 games. Soto’s blend of youthful vigor and a proven track record places him at the forefront of the player market, making him an exceptionally coveted asset.

Additionally, Juan Soto expressed a heightened sense of comfort in San Diego during the 2023 season, following an initial period of adjustment in 2022 following his acquisition from the Washington Nationals.

It’s crucial to recall that the Padres relinquished a considerable cache of young talent to acquire Juan Soto at the 2022 Trade Deadline. Consequently, they would likely have the opportunity to acquire valuable long-term assets in return if they decide to trade Juan Soto this upcoming offseason.
