As the countdown to Spring Training accelerates, the New York Yankees continue to explore opportunities to strengthen their roster. Following an offseason marked by significant acquisitions including Max Fried, Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger, and Devin Williams, the organization appears poised for potential final adjustments before pitchers and catchers report.

With approximately two weeks remaining before official workouts commence, General Manager Brian Cashman and his staff maintain an active presence in the market. The Yankees find themselves in an enviable position, having assembled one of the American League’s most formidable rosters while still maintaining flexibility for strategic enhancements.

Among the intriguing possibilities emerging is the potential to create an extraordinary bullpen combination by pairing Williams with another elite reliever. Kenley Jansen, the accomplished closer coming off a successful stint with the Boston Red Sox, presents an opportunity to establish one of baseball’s most formidable relief corps heading into the 2025 campaign.

Evaluating the American League landscape

While the departure of Juan Soto to the Mets initially appeared as a significant setback, the Yankees’ aggressive response has positioned them favorably within the American League hierarchy. The organization effectively addressed the offensive void through Bellinger’s left-handed power and Goldschmidt’s veteran presence, while simultaneously upgrading their rotation with Fried, widely considered the premier left-handed starter available during the offseason.

However, in an increasingly competitive American League featuring powerhouse teams like the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles—all with legitimate championship aspirations—maintaining the status quo may prove insufficient. The Toronto Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins further contribute to the league’s depth of contenders.

The Yankees’ current roster construction already ranks among the league’s elite, yet the prospect of elevating their bullpen from excellent to potentially historic presents a compelling opportunity. Building upon their traditional strength in relief pitching, the 2025 bullpen features Williams, acquired from Milwaukee to succeed Clay Holmes. The potential addition of Jansen could transform this unit into an unprecedented force.

Jansen’s continued excellence and veteran power

Despite entering his age-36, Jansen continues to demonstrate elite closing capabilities. His credentials include three All-Star selections and a World Series championship, establishing him as one of baseball’s most reliable late-inning options. His experience in high-pressure situations aligns perfectly with the Yankees’ championship aspirations.

The 2024 season with Boston reinforced Jansen’s sustained effectiveness. Through 54 appearances, he maintained a 3.29 ERA while converting 29 save opportunities, demonstrating his continued mastery of late-game situations. While Williams currently holds the closer’s role in New York, Jansen’s potential addition as a setup man could recreate the dominant bullpen dynamic reminiscent of the Rivera-Wetteland combination that proved so successful in the late 1990s.

Role adaptation considerations

A primary consideration in pursuing Jansen involves his willingness to transition from his traditional closing role. Though such adjustments often present challenges for veteran closers, Jansen’s previous statements suggest an openness to contributing in whatever capacity best serves a championship-caliber team. The Yankees’ status as legitimate contenders could make this role adjustment more palatable.

Strategic Yankees impact analysis

The addition of Jansen would significantly enhance the Yankees‘ bullpen depth, potentially creating one of baseball’s most formidable relief combinations. Historical comparisons underscore the impact of elite bullpen tandems:

  • The Scott-Yates combination that propelled the Dodgers to their 2024 World Series victory
  • Houston’s Hader-Pressly partnership
  • The Miller-Allen duo that helped Cleveland reach the 2016 World Series

Beyond the immediate impact on late-game situations, Jansen’s presence would provide valuable depth and flexibility throughout the season. This redundancy in high-leverage relievers would allow manager Aaron Boone to optimize bullpen usage while maintaining effectiveness throughout the demanding 162-game schedule.

Time-sensitive decision making

As Spring Training approaches, the Yankees face a crucial decision regarding Jansen’s potential addition. His current free agent status presents an opportunity, though contract parameters remain undefined. The possibility of securing his services on a one-year agreement focused on championship pursuit merits serious consideration.

Championship implications

The Yankees have already positioned themselves as primary contenders in the American League, but the addition of Jansen could elevate their postseason prospects significantly. Pairing him with Williams would create an imposing late-game combination, particularly valuable in tight playoff matchups.

Success over baseball’s lengthy season demands both excellence and depth. Championship teams typically distinguish themselves through roster construction that provides multiple elite options at key positions. Jansen’s addition could represent the final component in assembling a complete championship roster.

The coming days will reveal whether the Yankees pursue this bold strategy. As Spring Training approaches, the potential to create one of baseball’s most dominant bullpens remains an intriguing possibility that could significantly impact the American League’s competitive landscape.

I think there next big move depends on if they unload Stroman. Adding Janson would be ridiculous especially if weaver matches like last season success. If it only cost reliever type money, it’s almost a no brainer, especially if we trade Stroman.
