As the New York Yankees inch closer to the postseason, there’s growing unrest among the fanbase. Fans have been vocal about their desire for changes, particularly when it comes to Anthony Rizzo’s playing time.

Anthony Rizzo, who returned from the injured list (IL) on September 1st after a forearm fracture, hasn’t quite found his rhythm at the plate, prompting calls for Ben Rice to take over first base in these crucial final games.

Anthony Rizzo’s struggles since returning

Anthony Rizzo, New York Yankees first baseman, preparing for an at-bat during a game, as his recent struggles at the plate with a .207 batting average since returning from the IL have raised questions about his role in the lineup. Fans are increasingly vocal about potential changes to the Yankees' starting roster.

Anthony Rizzo’s return was initially seen as a boost to the Yankees’ lineup. However, his performance since then has been disappointing. In the 20 days following his return, Rizzo has posted a .207 batting average, a .281 on-base percentage, and a .276 slugging percentage. His OPS has dropped to .557, with an OPS+ of 58, well below his usual standards. This offensive slump has raised questions about his role as the team gears up for October.

Fans want more Ben Rice

Ben Rice, versatile Yankees catcher and first baseman, taking practice swings in the batting cage for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. At 25, Rice has demonstrated offensive potential, hitting seven home runs in his MLB career, though recent struggles in the minors have dampened some of his momentum. Fans are eager for him to step up in the Yankees' push for the postseason.

Ben Rice, at 25, has been making waves in the minors and showing promising potential. Just three days ago, he hit a two-run home run for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, reaffirming his offensive prowess. Rice’s stats reflect his power at the plate—both in the minors and his brief time in the majors.

Ben Rice has made an impact at every level of his baseball journey this season, hitting 30 home runs across three levels. In the majors, he’s tallied 7 homers over 49 games. At Triple-A, Rice added 11 home runs in 29 games, while in Double-A, he contributed 12 in 49 games, including a bomb last Saturday.

Throughout his MLB career, Rice has recorded seven home runs and 23 RBIs in 149 at-bats. His performance in the minors, however, has been even more impressive, with 23 home runs, 55 RBIs, and a stellar .961 OPS in 285 at-bats. His .400 on-base percentage underscores his ability to consistently reach base and contribute offensively.

Many Yankees fans now see Rice as a logical option to help the team down the stretch. His versatility as both a catcher and first baseman offers the Yankees flexibility, and his potential to energize the lineup could be critical as they aim to finish the regular season strong. Fans believe that giving Rice more playing time, especially as the team battles for the top record in the American League, could provide the spark they need.

With the postseason looming, there is growing anticipation around what Rice could bring to the team, especially as an alternative to Anthony Rizzo, who has had his share of struggles this season. Rice’s power at the plate, combined with his ability to reach base, makes him a strong candidate to step up and contribute in key moments.

Whether Rice will get the chance to showcase his talents more frequently remains to be seen, but his potential to play a pivotal role as the Yankees push for a deep postseason run is undeniable.

Postseason implications

The decision to play Anthony Rizzo or Rice could have significant implications for the Yankees’ postseason. With the team’s focus on making a deep playoff run, every roster choice matters. Rizzo’s veteran presence and reliable defense at first base are undeniable assets, but his recent offensive numbers make him a questionable fit as the Yankees aim for October success. Rice’s potential, on the other hand, presents an intriguing option that could shift the lineup’s dynamics.

Manager Aaron Boone and the Yankees’ front office are now faced with difficult choices as they finalize their 26-man roster for the postseason. Along with determining Anthony Rizzo’s role, they’ll need to settle their pitching rotation, bullpen, and infield depth. Key players like Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Clay Holmes are expected to lead the charge, but the team’s young talent, including rookies Austin Wells and Luis Gil, could also be crucial down the stretch.

The conversation surrounding Anthony Rizzo and Ben Rice is just one part of a larger discussion about how the Yankees will prepare for October. Fans are eager for the team to prioritize performance over reputation, and many see Rice as a vital part of that strategy. Whether Boone will heed their calls remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: every decision made now could shape the Yankees’ fate as they chase a championship.

Rizzo is scooping everything! Jazz, Volpe, and Torres all have been inconsistent with their throwing and since he’s been back, he just has handled everything. Hey, how valuable is getting those outs?
