Jasson Dominguez is about to enter a crucial season in his career, one that could define his future with the Yankees. After being named the top prospect in Baseball America’s rankings, the young outfielder has put in significant work this offseason.

However, Yankees fans are growing increasingly vocal about their expectations, particularly regarding his left-field defense. They are eager to see him refine his game as they hope he can be the next homegrown star to make an impact in the Bronx.

Still, Yankees fans remain skeptical, and for good reason. They saw flashes of brilliance in his brief debut in 2023, but his struggles in limited action last year left them wanting more. Many feel that Dominguez needs to show a more polished approach at the plate and improved defensive consistency to solidify his place in the lineup. His potential is undeniable, but the Yankees faithful are impatient for results, especially given the team’s championship aspirations.

What the Yankees expect from Jasson Dominguez

According to the New York Post, Dominguez is finally getting his opportunity to live up to the immense hype that has surrounded him. After missing nearly the entire 2024 season recovering from a UCL tear, he played sparingly in the latter months but lacked the ideal conditions to fully showcase his abilities. This year, he will have a true shot at proving himself.

Following a promising September call-up in 2023, Jasson Dominguez endured an injury-plagued 2024 but now enters spring training as the projected starting left fielder. He is expected to join Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger in a reshaped Yankees outfield.

The Yankees’ front office is backing Jasson Dominguez, with general manager Brian Cashman making it clear that he will have every opportunity to win the left-field job. “I’d like to see Dominguez get his shot,” Cashman said. “He’s young, he has to earn it, and he has to retain it.”

At just 21 years old, Jasson Dominguez’s major league career has been stop-and-go. Despite the setbacks, his switch-hitting power and athleticism offer a unique dimension to the Yankees’ lineup. Manager Aaron Boone recently mentioned him as a potential leadoff hitter, a clear indication of the confidence the organization has in him.

The Yankees made major offseason moves by signing Cody Bellinger and acquiring Paul Goldschmidt to bolster their lineup after failing to retain Juan Soto in free agency. While the team is relying on veteran bats to compensate for the loss, a fully healthy Dominguez could be an X-factor. His ability to adjust to major league pitching remains a key question, as he struggled late last season.

Had he not suffered a torn UCL just eight games into his MLB career in 2023—shortly after homering off Justin Verlander in his first at-bat—Dominguez might have already solidified his place in the lineup. Instead, the Yankees brought in Alex Verdugo as a temporary solution in left field, pushing Dominguez’s opportunity back another season.

Though he returned from injury in mid-2024, Jasson Dominguez was optioned to Triple-A and later sidelined again with an oblique strain. By September, calls for his promotion grew louder as Verdugo slumped, but the Yankees waited until Sept. 9 to bring him up. In 18 games, he hit just .179 with a .617 OPS, and his transition from center to left field was far from seamless, leading to some defensive miscues. By the postseason, the Yankees opted for Verdugo in left field while Dominguez was reduced to a pinch-running role.

With a full offseason to prepare and an entire spring training dedicated to refining his left-field play, Dominguez is looking to prove he is ready to be a long-term fixture in the Yankees’ outfield. Fans will be watching closely, hoping that this is the year he finally delivers on his immense promise.
