Yankees fans are becoming increasingly concerned following a series sweep, but general manager Brian Cashman attempted to reassure them on Tuesday by asserting that the team is performing well. However, his comment that he is happy with the current team triggers seething anger among Yankees fans.
Brian Cashman acknowledged the frustration from both external sources and within the team itself. Nevertheless, he emphasized their unwavering belief in the team and its capabilities.
I’m happy with their commitment. I’m happy with their care,” he said. “Ultimately, I know I’ll be happy with their end results.”
Brian Cashman defended the slumping Yankees
The New York Yankees currently hold the third position in the AL East after suffering defeats in all games of a series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park over the weekend. Out of their previous 11 games, they have only managed to win three and lost eight. The absence of their star player, Aaron Judge, has made it challenging for the team to score runs. This was evident during the doubleheader on Sunday, where they could only muster three runs across two games.
While some fans believe that the Yankees excessively rely on Judge for offensive performance, Brian Cashman has faith in the other players in the lineup and feels that the Yankees can survive without their best player.
Brian Cashman expressed contentment with their approach and praised their commitment and care. He expressed confidence that he will ultimately be satisfied with the results they achieve.
The Yankees’ recent series sweep by the Red Sox has led them to fall 10½ games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the division title race and 5½ games behind the second-place Baltimore Orioles. This position in the division has drawn attention to the Yankees’ offensive struggles in Judge’s absence. They currently have the lowest batting average in the entire league since June 3, standing at .195.
Brian Cashman reiterated that the group of players is highly skilled when it comes to hitting. He acknowledged the challenging nature of the season, describing it as a tough grind. Cashman recognized that facing difficulties is an inherent part of the game. He emphasized the team’s commitment to persisting through these challenges, stating that enduring them does not make the journey any easier.
Brian Cashman’s folly
Brian Cashman stated that they have no intentions of engaging in trades to find a replacement for Judge. He stressed the importance of patiently waiting for Judge’s return and expressed faith in the capabilities of other players on the team. Brian Cashman acknowledged the absence but remained optimistic that their performance will improve over time.
Brian Cashman reaffirmed his support for the coaching staff, standing by them despite recent outcomes. He mentioned that their approach is not to blame and believed that a market correction will occur with time, leading to a return to their usual performance. He also expressed his support for the players, even though the Yankees ended a four-game losing streak on Tuesday, but still trail the first-place Rays in the AL East by 9½ games.
He expressed his satisfaction with the players’ commitment and preparation, emphasizing their dedication. Brian Cashman asserted the team’s strong potential when performing at their best but recognized that recent performances have been below par, resulting in a negative perception. He understood that losing was not enjoyable for anyone and empathized with the fans’ frustration. Brian Cashman acknowledged that there is still a long way to go in the season and assured that the team will take the necessary actions to reach their desired position.
But the current situation is unfavorable for the Yankees as their performance has experienced a significant decline in the span of a year. Last year, they were leading the major leagues in walks, but in 2023, they have dropped to the 25th position in this category. This decline has adversely affected their overall on-base percentage, which has fallen from fifth place to 28th place. Furthermore, their OPS, which measures offensive productivity, has also suffered, moving from fourth place to 21st place.
Brian Cashman said no to Peraza return
Despite displaying versatility by playing shortstop, second base, and third base, general manager Brian Cashman remains resolute in not calling Oswald Peraza. Additionally, Cashman noted on Tuesday that Peraza should continue to focus on his development, which raises questions considering Anthony Volpe’s strong performance.
