Yankees expected to ‘swoop in’ on Alex Bregman to address infield void

With Spring Training fast approaching, speculation is mounting over Alex Bregman’s future as the Yankees remain in need of a proven infielder. The former Houston Astros third baseman, a two-time World Series champion and one of the top free agents still available, has yet to find a contract offer to his satisfaction.

The Astros recently made a move to clear payroll, trading closer Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for prospect Juan Bello. The deal trimmed $8.5 million off Houston’s payroll, positioning the team to re-engage with Bregman. However, negotiations remain stalled. According to Ari Alexander of KPRC TV, the Astros’ six-year, $156 million offer “is unlikely to get the deal done,” leaving the 31-year-old infielder still on the market.

The Yankees, facing a significant void in their infield after Gleyber Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Detroit Tigers, could attempt to capitalize on the situation. Dylan Backer of Empire Sports Media suggested that New York might “swoop in” on Bregman if they’re willing to make a competitive offer.

“The Yankees have a glaring issue in the infield, as their internal options are simply not good enough,” Backer wrote. “Bregman could help fill that hole if the Yankees decide to restart talks, but it would need to be at an affordable price.”

While the Yankees have not been publicly linked to Bregman, their need for an experienced infielder makes them an intriguing option. However, convincing Bregman to take less money to join a World Series-contending team could prove challenging.

Red Sox and Astros still in the mix

The Yankees aren’t the only team monitoring Bregman’s status. The Boston Red Sox are also rumored to be interested, though they’ve reportedly refused to offer a deal longer than four years. According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, Bregman has dismissed any offers shorter than five years, potentially putting Boston out of the running.

That leaves the Astros as the most likely landing spot, though Houston will need to increase its offer to secure the veteran infielder. If the stalemate continues, the Yankees could find an opportunity to present a deal, especially if Bregman prioritizes joining a playoff-ready team.

The Yankees’ offseason has been marked by significant losses, including superstar Juan Soto, who signed a record-breaking $765 million deal with the Mets. With Spring Training less than four weeks away, New York remains in search of solutions to bolster its roster for the 2025 season.

Adding Alex Bregman would not only address a glaring need in the infield but also provide the Yankees with a veteran presence as they aim to return to the World Series. Whether the Yankees will make their move remains to be seen, but as other teams fall out of contention, their window of opportunity may soon arrive.
