Yankees fans are the most vocal supporters of their team. But the team showed scant regard for their voices when they ejected a fan carrying “FIRE CASHMAN” sign on Wednesday. It was a rare incident but big enough to put a blot on the glorious history of the Yankees.

Yankees’ general manager, Brian Cashman, faced criticism for his inability to secure significant deals ahead of Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline. Fans of the New York Yankees are far from pleased with their longtime general manager after a trade deadline that left much to be desired. The Yankees’ roster has evident weaknesses, leading many to anticipate significant moves from the team before the deadline. In a rather surprising move, Cashman opted for two exceedingly minor trades, which were far from convincing, leaving fans disheartened to hear it again.

Among the dissatisfied fans was “JonFromMaspeth,” who made his dissatisfaction clear by displaying a “Fire Cashman” sign during Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The day began innocently enough for “JonFromMaspeth,” who proudly exhibited his banner outside Yankee Stadium, six hours before the trade deadline. As the deadline passed and the game commenced, he tweeted from inside the ballpark, expressing his disappointment.

During the 5-2 Yankees loss, the infamous “Fire Cashman” chant echoed through the stadium, The mounting frustration culminated in a passionate “Fire Cashman” chant during the recent game against the Tampa Bay Rays. But “JonFromMaspeth” felt that the coverage of the event was lacking, as no Yankees beat writer mentioned it.

He tweeted, “Not one single Yankees beat writer mentioned anything about the #FireCashman chants tonight. Shame because we know they fear punishment if they do.”

Determined to make his message heard, “JonFromMaspeth” returned to Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, and this is when things took an intriguing turn. Jon boldly displayed a conspicuous “FIRE CASHMAN” sign behind home plate, which promptly caught the attention of stadium security and resulted in the fan’s ejection.

An hour later, “JonFromMaspeth” tweeted “Security giving me sh–t about the sign now. At first they said it was ‘too close to advertising’ and reflective upon that. Then they said they got a call saying it’s no longer permitted because it’s ‘distasteful about the GM.’”

Jon makes sure it catches the attention of Yankees fans

The intriguing part of this story is that the fan involved took the initiative to document the entire saga, making it quite entertaining. When he arrived at the security checkpoint with his sign, things took an interesting turn. Security attempted to confiscate it, citing regulations stating that signs could not exceed six feet in length. However, the fan had cleverly adhered to this rule, as his sign measured exactly six feet. Undeterred, the security personnel proceeded to nitpick and raise objections about other aspects of the sign, adding another layer of drama to the situation.

Security giving me shit about the sign now. At first they said it was “too close to advertising” and reflective upon that. Then they said they got a call saying it’s no longer permitted because it’s “distasteful about the GM”.

According to Jon from Maspeth, an intriguing series of events unfolded as he recounted his experience. He mentioned that security closely followed him throughout the stadium and even kept an eye on his Twitter account. The pivotal moment came when he moved to a spot behind home plate. It appears that he might have been ejected due to not having tickets for that section, compounded by the fact that having a large white sign behind the catcher violates the stadium rules. While the precise content or size of the sign may have influenced the situation, it’s clear that the combination of factors led to the eventual outcome.

Should I make a run for it and go behind home plate with the sign? pic.twitter.com/dytoJdZXGx

Mission accomplished. #FireCashman pic.twitter.com/dDhBGsmCuG

However, his fellow fans adored it.

I felt all the love from the crowd. #FireCashman pic.twitter.com/4oBAAXWYrR

An age-old clash between Yankees fans and the team’s GM remains unresolved, making it difficult to determine the winner of this round. But the ejection is not the solution. It could be if the Yankees do that with Cashman.

Yankees GM is explaining his trade inaction while fan Jon holds a banner reading "FIRE CASHMAN" outside Yankee Stadium on Aug 1, 2023.

“JonFromMaspeth”‘s first amendment rights were violated.
Gee, I wonder who made “the call” about this sign “being disrespectful to the GM”? 🤔

Re: free speech. I see nothing wrong with the fire Cashma sign. It is a valid question. Hopefully the fan should be reimbursed and given free tickets. Another valid question might be should Hal sell the team?
He definitely is NOT his father’s son. George never would have stood for this. Would have been interesting to see a Georger Steinbrenner/Steve Cohen show in NYC. Just saying ….

Why should the Steingrabbers sell? They make more money than Midas. They don’t care about the team or the fans. They came right out and said so. Also the farm system was raped by the Steingrabber witch J’s husband who was her gardener before he was put in charge of scouting. Doesn’t anyone remember? Entitled dysfunctional SOBs.
Free speech? Where? Not at yankee stadium. Not at madison garden.

Well the only way to make sure they know your not happy is by not showing to the games. If they don’t make money then they will care.
But if you keep showing to the games and he’s making money why care. I’m a die hard yankees fan but is painful watching this team and the lack of team ownership to make a change bothers me. The Yankees always did whatever it took to make a run not this ownership, they are content to make money.
