The Yankees have sent Will Warren back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, cutting short his chance to pitch in the team’s final game of the regular season.
With the postseason just around the corner, the Yankees are making tough roster decisions, and Will Warren’s latest performance did not meet the standard needed for a spot in the critical days ahead.
Yankees send Will Warren back to Triple-A
With the postseason approaching, the Yankees are making critical roster decisions, and Will Warren’s recent outing wasn’t enough to secure his spot for the final days of the regular season.
Will Warren was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday morning, getting another shot to contribute at the major league level. However, after struggling in a 9-4 loss to the Pirates, that opportunity vanished. Warren pitched the ninth inning of the game, surrendering three earned runs on two hits and a walk while managing to strike out three batters. It wasn’t the performance the Yankees needed, pushing Warren’s ERA to 10.32 over 22.2 innings for the season. Following the game, the Yankees promptly sent him back down to Triple-A.
Before Saturday’s game, Will Warren had recorded a 9.55 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP through 21.2 innings over five starts this season. CBS had speculated that Will Warren might get a chance out of the bullpen for the final stretch, especially since Cody Poteet had been optioned in a corresponding move to make room for him. But after his rough outing, Warren’s chance to stay with the major league squad dissolved.
With the playoffs in sight, the Yankees need stability, and Will Warren’s performances have fallen short of that standard. His limited appearances this year have resulted in a 10.64 ERA—a glaring statistic that led to the team’s decision to send him back to Triple-A as they finalize their roster for the postseason.
The Yankees’ plan was straightforward—bring Will Warren up, give him one more opportunity, and see if he could deliver the kind of inning that would earn him a spot on the roster. Unfortunately, he couldn’t rise to the occasion, and now his season concludes in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. As the Yankees prepare for postseason baseball, consistency is key, and Warren’s struggles with command and control proved costly. Though his strikeouts showed potential, the hits, walks, and runs allowed were simply too much to overlook.
It’s a harsh reminder of just how difficult it is to stay in the majors, and for Will Warren, it’s back to Triple-A with hopes of working on the issues that kept him from cementing his place on the roster this season.

Calling up Warren for these 2 games, was so stupid, they are just lucky that Hal is the owner and not George. Someone would’ve been fired because it cost them Cody Poteet on the roster for the ALDS. I’m not even discussing what Warren did that showed he deserved another MLB appearance in 2024.
